I have to say up in Ontario we had a giant snowfalls for the past few years. I was in the Ottawa area for one of them and I'm 5'10 and there were snow piles taller than me, by at least 6 inches. Also it has been a cold winter but when hasn't it been. Its always cold in Canada, its what your parka is for. I think we had one green Christmas but got pay back 2 weeks later when I swear in one night we got like 3 feet of snow.

Everyone might want to make sure all your plumbing pipes are wrapped with insulation, and your hot water tank also. Burst pipes in the winter are nasty.

If you are in an area with farms, and hay bales are available, good to put against the north or windy side of the house. Plastic on the windows, good thick curtains helps lots too.

Extra blanket, some type of food bar and cold weather safety kit in your cars, just in case of breakdown from the cold.

This should be a no brainer, but I am always surprised by the amount of things people don't think of if they're not used to cold winters. Even here in Saskatchewan we have about a dozen people freeze to death in winter. They find some of them during the spring thaw. Usually from trying to walk from a broken down vehicle in a blizzard or extreme cold.

Just wanted to post some links I have come across regarding the loop current and changes to weather patterns.

This video is very interesting, just curious if John Moore is a credible source???

Pennine UK here. The last 2 winters were awful, with the last one being the worst. I'm not talking about snow but prolonged ice and cold. We have a bit of water which runs down our access lane. Well last winter it built up as thick ice and lasted for weeks. We couldn't get our vehicles up or down the lane for a couple of months. Usually it just freezes up for 3 or 4 days. I was dragging sacks of coal down by hand. In fact I bought a sled!
People who have lived here most of their lives say they never experienced anything like it. I know several people who had falls, including 2 with broken bones.
A friend who teaches geography said it was due to changes in the gulf current. I worry that one year, it simply won't get warm again. Certainly, for this year, I'm worried. So much so that I am storing up my work leave to take in the winter months. And I'm stocking up on coal NOW.

i've gotten intrigued with the whole notion of pole shifts- which a smart guy named einstien signed off on. then i saw a bit on how the poles are sort of wobbling now-
thus the plates are grinding and the weather patterns are shifting. ask a farmer if
you want to get an earful. maybe its affecting the bees. maybe the whole universe is is warming/cooling, or just erratic? it would seem we will either poison the joint, blow
it up, or a volcano will put us under. maybe a couple other out of the blue calamities.
buckle up. lotsa luck.

The Loop current does this nearly every year - the timing of this year's breakaway eddy may intensify hurricanes in the Gulf later this season, but that is all the effect it will have.

As for this winter - well, Id like to see some proper snow drifts again before I die. And some decent cold weather (not just a coupls of night's worth like last 2 winters). I expect we'll have a cold spell like with the last couple of years. But thats probably about it. Be happy to be proved wrong though.

Edit: as far as the UK is concerned some of the severest cold winters ever recorded occurred during the Medieval Warm Period. Worth bearing in mind ....

Einstein knew less about geology than you and simply said Hapgood's theory was worth further study. Such study later proved the idea completely wrong. So don't worry, New York won't end up at the North Pole within the next 100 million years.

Isn't it a natural progression for the earth to heat up and cool down?
Man-made global warming is balls, doesn't global warming occur on Mars. I just think we're seeing real seasons, we've had that much BS fed to us about global warming that we need an excuse for severe weather. It's just a natural cycle in my opinion.

You are quite entitled to an opinion....it just happens to be wrong.

The hot summer and cold winters have little to do with the overall global warming trend. Instead the sun (which is currently in an unusually extended solar minimum) is irradiating the earth with less ultraviolet radiation. This radiation affects the jet stream. Normally it would move like a wave up and down. However, the low level of UV has caused this motion to stop which then causes WEATHER systems NB WEATHER not climate! to stick. This results in hotter summers and colder winters.

Please research first, thank you.

Call me crazy but I can clearly feel a very hard winter will come end of this year. I am like crop....I just know it, but don't know why and from where, but I am always right with my weather predictions.

A long summer will end mid october, then a short cold phase will come. November is again relative warm, but in the mid of December it will be very cold (-20°c) in Europe for maybe over 5 weeks. The birds will die and fall from the trees. I also can feel a cold February and march and a very very hot summer 2011. This predictions only for Europe GE, FR, CH, AU and near countrys. It's not for Italy or Spain. They have a different climate zone.

I wonder - my prediction stays since July 2010 (before BP). Hmm...I really feel it comming (not only in my bones)

Oh so now global warming isn't about CO2 levels, it's about the solar minimum.

Gosh you know trading pollution credits was invented by those scumbags at ENRON who also funded research into global warming.

Global warming is just a con-job to steal more money from the little people freezing in their homes because their power bills are too high. Take your B/S and tell someone who cares.
