If we were 1000 years in the future, this may have been one of monumental turning points in human consciousness.

It is the epitome of human degradation and devolution, mental illness and wanton greed at the expense of nothing to get their evil ways.

I pray to see her miraculous soul again.

Haha pretty cool..I hope these poachers kill all animals around them and when there's none left to kill there spread around allover world and kill other animals too. when all animals are dead, environment shot to #, ecosystem in tatters, climate change etx ........... then will come upon the deaths of billions of people for committing crimes against nature. hopefully then the nature will get rid of half parasite half human virus known as man.

Pity nihilist's never follow their own advice. The question that seems to be ignored and brushed over is: who the heck is buying these poached animal bi-products?

You can go after the poachers all you want but until you solved the problem of "why the heck their is demand for an endangered species", the problem will continue.

As per Global Warming NEWS FLASH! During the times of the Romans there was few if any Glaciers over the Alps and other places. Heck it is colder today than during the time of the Romans. I would be more concerned with deforestation and left over pollution from the Western Industrial Revolution then some convoluted leftist idiocy.

Rhino horn is used by the Chinese as "traditional medicine". It's prescribed for almost any illness. And the saddest part is, it's all myth. Taking rhino horn as medicine has the same effect as chewing your own finger nails. Literally.

...
According to Bernard Read's 1931 translation of Li Shih-chen's 1597 materia medica Pen Ts' ao Kang Mu, rhino horn was prescribed for nearly everything: "To cure devil possession and keep away all evil spirits and miasmas. For gelsemium poisoning. To remove hallucinations and bewitching nightmares. Continuous administration lightens the body and makes one very robust. For typhoid, headache and feverish colds. For carbuncles and boils full of pus. For intermittent fevers with delirium. To expel fear and anxiety, to calm the liver and clear the vision. It is a sedative to the viscera, a tonic, antipyretic. It dissolves phlegm. It is an antidote to the evil miasma of hill streams. For infantile convulsions and dysentery. Ashed and taken with water to treat violent vomiting, food poisoning, and overdosage of poisonous drugs. For arthritis, melancholia, loss of the voice."

If the few remaining members of the species are living at zoos,

that may not even be a survivable geneline.

Although i am thankful it is not the very last female.

I wonder if a surrogate species mother could be used in an emergency?

Some good news from South Africa is that a large (possibly THE main) rhino horn smuggling/poaching ring has been bust:

Thanks for the link to the other thread.

Here is another link to a newspaper article Rhino Masterminds face charges

The nine include two veterinarians, one of their spouses, and a game farmer and his wife.

Some of these criminals are educated people and on top of it - veterinarians!

The thread author used the exact title of the article. And it says the last female white rhino in South Africa, not the entire world.

They need to step up patrols. South Africa, if I'm not mistaken, produces the Denel/Mechem NTW-20 anti-matériel rifle. This thing puts out a 20mm shell easily capable of dropping a helicopter or a poacher. Give these things to specialized task forces, and I'll bet you'll see a dramatic reduction in poaching.

Really not sure what that comment has to do with Rhino poaching.

Anyway, here are some facts about the Southern White Rhino population (there only 7 Northen White rhino's left in captivity and they are all out of breeding age).

As of 2007 there are only approximately 17000 southern white rhinos. South Africa has 80% of these rhinos. We are their last hope.

Let me say it again... 17000. If you think that's a lot, next time you watch the Superbowl, imagine 17000 people in the stadium watching the game. You would be inclined to think that football is dying.
