well my guess would be there "selling" the image that they are doing more than what they are, or that they are paying more attention then what they are. just a guess.

That was my guess too but apparently instead of a company trying to pretend they are more proactive on a disaster than they are, I am being told it is a beer commercial.

BP has now setup a set on Flickr for their "altered images".

Funny.

Looks like there are really trying to minimize it with that. It is kind of a 'look, we edit pictures and here they are. See how dark it was in that helicopter? We lightened it so you could see it better. That control room screen did not really pop so we altered saturation. Ignore the fist two pics altogether, nothing to see there.

yeah sorry but I doubt there is any image in newspapers or websites of any company that HASN'T been edited!

I just read this story on new Scientist, and it sounded like they were trying to hide something, when in fact all they were doing was cleaning up a couple of nonactive screens and enhancing the image. I would put money on the fact that the control room shot WAS NOT edited by BP, but rather by the photographer as you can actually see in the bottom right screen the cloned screen was getting copied onto the one next to it, and they obviously got bored and gave up.

Now if BP were actually doing this to hide something there is no way in hell they would have let that slip.

The helicopter image is more interesting though, especially as the see is miraculously a much more vibrant blue than the dark and murky oil filled sea from the original photo. But to be honest, who wouldn't try to make the image look as good as possible?

not saying it's right, but if you don't already assume that from looking at any of the photos that BP themselves release then they shouldn't be on ATS as you'll obviously believe anything
which on here could be a very dangerous thing

I have a pretty nice camera. Rebel. Sometimes I take photos in the raw format where there is no picture until I load it into my computer. Gives me awesome colors and resolution.

Now, I do not know if they are doing this, but I also do not, not alter almost every photograph I take. Depending on the size and format I take with it, I have differing batch process presets.

On top of that, depending on lighting and other things I just try all the different presets to see how they look.

Just giving my two cents.

Until I started editing with the Digital Photo Professional software that came with the camera, I had no idea how good I could make bad pictures show up. Heck, I was taking pictures at night and I have this picture of the Astoria Bridge that nothing could be really seen on it until I edited it. Take a look.

What I am getting at is that some people just cannot leave the photos alone. It is almost like a compulsion to make them better. I am one of those.

Not backing up BP. Charge anyone with negligent manslaughter and also with the damage to the Gulf, I am sure something is there. Anyway, just my opinion.
