Oakland just laid off 80 cops.

Oakland, CA is by San Francisco, and is one of the toughest cities to live in. Laying off 80 cops and letting all the criminals know that is not a smart choice.

cbs13.com...

On top of that, they stated exactly what crimes the officers will not respond to... 44 crimes will not be responded to by OPD

Here's a partial list:

* burglary
* theft
* embezzlement
* grand theft
* grand theft:dog
* identity theft
* false information to peace officer
* required to register as sex or arson offender
* dump waste or offensive matter
* discard appliance with lock
* loud music
* possess forged notes
* pass fictitious check
* obtain money by false voucher
* fraudulent use of access cards
* stolen license plate
* embezzlement by an employee (over $ 400)
* extortion
* attempted extortion
* false personification of other
* injure telephone/ power line
* interfere with power line
* unauthorized cable tv connection
* vandalism
* administer/expose poison to another's

Doesnt this make things even worse for the people and better for the bad guys? The bad guys now know what cops wont respond to, so they would feel more free to do those crimes, knowing cops wont come or will take a much longer time to look into it.

There is only one solution for the problem, and thats not job cuts, its pay cuts. If i was a cop, i would car about being a cop more than the money i make for being a cop. Also, if i was a cop, and i knew that 80 cops getting laid off, and one of them was my partner, i would be willing to take a pay cut, in other for the partner to keep his job and also take a pay cut. Sure it would be harder to live if your life is full of expensive bills, BUT i would rather have a back up then get paid and no back up at all. You can sell things, make your life cheaper, but keep a job.

if 100 cops take a small pay cut, they might be able to save 10 cops from being laid off, thus keeping streets safer, keeping each officer safer.

Now if im a cop and i know my partner was laid off, would i want to run after a bad guy? would i want to protect more or less people, or protect myself more and stay in the car or behind a corner.

If every single person in OPD takes a 5% cut, for some it might be $10 a day and for some $20 a day, then imagine how many jobs they would save, imagine how many cops they would actually be able to add to the street..... we are looking at about 1 cop per 10-20 people 5% pay cut, depending on their pay etc... OPD has about 800 officers, and probably 2,000 employees, so we are looking at about 3,000 workers who take a 5% and that would actually add 150-300 extra officers!!!! ... my math is not superb, but it does make more sense than laying off 80 officers because people are all about money/greed and all about me me me!

At some point however, you simply have to say "NO"

While you want them to sacrafice thier wages AND benifts you leave out some salient points:

The police had agreed to several council requests: paying 9 percent of their salaries into their pension plans and agreeing to a later retirement age for new hires. But in return, they wanted a three-year moratorium on officer layoffs. www.sfgate.com.../c/a/2010/07/13/MNV11EDUCC.DTL

To chalk this up as meer greed is simplistic at best. I dont see the mayor or his bloated administration offering to take a pay cut to save officers either

Regardless of the cause of this layoff, it is putting Oakland at risk. The hardened criminals will be emboldened. Not the casual jackhole who might knock off a convenience store with a water gun that he spray-painted black, but the gang-bangers who have a reputation on the streets to maintain. Like that movie "The Crow", where that gang sat around planning devil's night on Halloween, just because they could.

All those real crimes they won't be doing anything about...

Guaranteed they'll still be busting people for smoking/growing a harmless plant in the privacy of their own homes.

Laying off 80 cops, that's not really a good thing but can be dealt with.

Telling the crims which laws you won't be enforcing, that's just plain stupid.

Whoever thought of that idea has a few kangaroos loose in the top paddock. It's basically a green-light for people to do these crimes.

So I guess this means if a bugler enters your home you have every right to blow there head off.. and when the cops come to respond to the shooting you can just say.. "well you were not going to protect my safety and property so I had to"

Doesn't really matter last time we had a bugler in town they hit 50% of the homes in our small town.. many calls to the cops did nothing so my wife and I figured out who did it, and turned them in.. we were 100% correct and we got nothing from it , the county of course got all the legal fees and fines etc.. .. and the victims got absolutely nothing..

I told the cops, next person stealing my stuff, and I catch them, I wont be calling the police, I'll just put a 12 gauge to the back of there head.. and we'll see how they can pay some restitution in that position.

well you shouldn't be a cop if you won't go after a bad guy because you have no partner. being a cop is going after evil people and serving and protecting the good. plus 8 in the clip and one in the chamber is all the back up you need.

This is just political BS. They always take down the cops, the fire dept, and schools first because they want to make you think if you dont vote for a tax increase then you will be unsafe or burn to death or have a bunch of illiterate children. Just ignore it and point any criminals you know to the politicians houses, because when their asses get robbed or they burn up or their kids go full tard then they will start cutting out the real fat and cronyism that bloats government expenses.

You can bet they layed off cops at the same time they kept some BS art project, or save an animal project, or add another olympic pool to the local school.

Funny you should talk about a tax...

If voters fail to approve two ballot measures in November, the total number of police layoffs could total more than 200.

Anyone else notice that they are only going to enforce the "crimes" that generate revenue for them. No big surprise here. Protect and serve...

On a brighter note. It is great news for the people of Oakland. Less cops is always better.

i was talking in regards to many officers who had back up, and now have no back up, they would rather sit and hide when it gets to dangerous. you and me both know that sometimes we might think twice about our actions and we know nobody has our back, if we have back up coming or have a partner, its a whole different game.

This is what happens when "you run out of money".

So what does one do when "money" is no longer in plentiful supply?

We are seeing what happens.

The question is, how to get more?

So far none of the geniuses have figured it all out.

By the way, I am not a genius. Some of you may have noticed that by now.

I have some ideas. One is do what happened in the U.S during the Great Depression. Um,,,wait. Those policies actually didn't work.

Oh, oh! I know! Naw war sucks. Been there. Done that. War sucks, especially a World War. And that only works as a solution for a rather short time, anyways.

I'd say it sucks to be a laid off policeman in Oakland, as well as one of the "fortunate" ones who remain on the force. And, for sure, sucks to be a citizen of Oakland. That seems like a horror to me. Considering.....well........it's Oakland.

This is, of course, an example of events that are occuring all over the U.S. Nobody has an answer. Or at least nobody in the various offices of govermment are solving this economic crisis.

One person did speak a truth. An ugly truth. The judge in an Ohio county recently who was asked what the citizens could do because the sheriff's department was reduced to one patrol car? Ashland County, by the way. The judge suggested people buy guns.

That isn't an acceptable solution, now, is it?

Boohoo. Less corrupt cops is always a plus.

No big deal. Maybe some of those citizen will learn to become real independent citizens and stop being little scared rabbits.

And if it gets too bad, Swarzi or Obama will send the army in.

This is good news! Coming spoon to a town or city near you

Deficit spending is a b!tch. You can only charge the credit card up for so long before the bills come due. This is just the beginning and will spread across the country. I hate to see the chaos but it will level the playing field eventually.

That's not going to be a top priority anymore?
