They may be able to regulate some of the pressure but,…
I was a plumber and while I can not say what an oil stream would look like under water I know what a 60 psi leak feels like underwater. Now when you adjust up for the pipe size they have and the humongous volume they are dealing with I say mmmmhm you’re momma didn’t raise no fool.
I think there would be a lot of regulation for it to putter out so gently.
I smell a rat also.
This is their dog and pony show for us.

According to what I read in a news story about the new cap earlier, they're doing pressure tests right now to determine whether the cap can withstand the pressure and stop the flow. They expect 8,000 to 9,000 PSI and consider 6,000 PSI to be too low.

Scientists will be looking for pressure readings of 8,000 to 9,000 pounds per square inch. Anything lower than 6,000 might indicate previously unidentified leaks in the well.


As for the flow we're watching coming out of the pipe. Yes, it's high pressure but relatively low volume. Think about a garden hose. It flows slowly but when you try to cover it with your finger you find that it's actually got a lot of pressure. Yahoo Answers says that household water pressure is 50 PSI - 70 PSI which sounds reasonable to me.

Ok appologies for not having the facts before I posted BUT here is the proof i left out. The well is now reading 6700psi take from that the down pressure from the water and you are left with over 4000psi. At this rate the oil would have been shooting for a very considerable distance before eddying, but as you can see it clearly is not. This is NOT the main leak and is probably not even at sea!

your figures are presuming the fluid has a constant density?

and are forgetting oil is lighter than water ?

So how do you know what it would look like at 5000 plus feef and approx 12000 psi underwater pressure , would not the fluid stream dissipate slightly towards the outer edge of it volume first(like the pics occasionally show?), getting compressed towards the fluid masses centre?

Easy ever use a pressure washer most are 1500 to 3000 psi thats enough to blow a hole in your house. that well shot looks like your garden hose

yes, i have used a pressure washer. a hole in the house might be an exaggeration.

but i would imagine the water 5000 feet down might create a bit of counter-force.

put that pressure-hose deep under water and see what the pressure is like.

Just to add a little technical accuracy. The bottom hole reservoir pressure is 12,000 psi. The oil with gas in solution weighs around 7#/gallon. Therefore the hydrostatic head is around 4700 psi. Without any friction loss pressure(not possible in real world) the flowing pressure would be 12000-4700 or 7300 psi that is pushing against the sea water of 2300 psi. So the differential is 5000 psi. Friction loss is probable 200-300 psi per 1000' of depth to the reservoir.

So your proof that the fix is fake is an out of date photo. that photo was taken on the 12/7/10 as can be seen on the data of the ROV that is the day the cap was first placed and had not begun testing. So oil should have still been leaking at that time as the valves where still open.

can someone please tell me why BP is engaging in a massive PR blockade to all news outlets, no photographs etc etc, you know the story.

obama even enacts suspension of your first amendment and yet they provide so called "livefeed cams" of millions of gallons of leaking crude oil on the internet for the world to see???

something just doesn't add up here if you ask me......

this whole story stinks to high heaven and I dont think we are seeing the truth. The OP might be onto something. he might not be right, but all we have is speculation IMO.
