Khadr turned down deal; wants to defend himself

Khadr is charged with the 2002 murder of a U.S. soldier and other war crimes and is being tried here by a U.S. military commission.

At a pre-trial hearing Monday, Khadr told Col. Patrick Parrish, the judge overseeing the case, that he wanted to fire his lawyers and boycott a procedure he called unfair and unjust.

As evidence of that unfairness, Khadr told the court he had been offered a deal by prosecutors in which he would have been sentenced to 30 years but would only have to actually serve five years. He says he cannot plead guilty to a crime he did not commit and that such a deal was set up only to make U.S. politicians look good.

The guy seems to have given up, and will let whatever happens happen. Can't really blame him all that much, if what he claims is true. Anyone know about this case?
