To be honest I don't think "statistically" that we're seeing a trend of more or bigger quakes. I think people are watching more closely due to the large events in Haiti and Chile at the beginning of the year.

For instance, we usually have c. 1600 5.0 - 6.0 mag quakes in a year - we're currently halfway through the year with 1004. earthquake.usgs.gov...

Plus, you need to remember that USGS report US quakes at lower mags than they do outside the US, so when something like the Baja quake occurs the whole coast lights up, however there are just as many aftershocks in other countries but they aren't reported unless over 2.5 or 4.0 in some areas.

However, GUT instinct is telling me otherwise and I feel this is a build up to a larger event on the West Coast.

Yeah, seems too shallow TBH, I'd expect it to change.

USGS is certainly one of the best places to look. There are also country-specific geo monitoring sites, too, like GEOnet for NZ. Worth checking them out as not all quakes make it to the USGS list in my experience.

I did take a semester about this in a University after a couple of years of courses. They concentrated on the San Andreas because it was near to the school I was in. From what I've read lately, the only question is, why has it not already happened. I know then the Professor was fighting with the city of L.A. to try and get them to increase codes and educate people. They of course had no interest in letting people know a huge quake was a fact and will happen shortly. This man estimated the epicenter at about Upland, CA and a minimum magnitude of 8.2 on the old scale. What is that, close to a 9 now?

He had us memorize verbatim, three typewritten pages of what to do before, during and after a quake. He lived in what he called an earthquake proof home. A continuous pour, reinforced concrete dome. He was a bit of a fanatic in fact.

Lots of years ago, but I still remember much of what I learned. Enough to know I barely scratched the surface.

Well, they are ARE working on it... the Alaska quake has been totally revised!!!
