Impossible.

Your title is misleading. This craft was launched last year. Even if it was launched 5 years ago and traveled at twice the speed of light, which it cannot, it still would not be on the outer rim of the entire universe to be able to get this data.

I don't know if this is the entire universe or not. Certainly seems to have elements outside of our galaxy.

However, the thing that caught my eye in your post is stating that the craft cannot have traveled to the edge of the universe in order to image it. Did I read this correctly?

Are you under the impression that we need to travel to the edge of the universe in order to capture an image of it? Would that not also mean that we have to travel to another galaxy in order to snap an image of it?

I look at it like this. If your going to take a picture of something in it's entirety, you have to be faraway enough from it to get it all in. Sure you can stand in the center and take a panoramic view but with something as large as the universe, I doubt we have the tech to do that. There would be galaxies beyond our views reach. I am not disputing that we cannot take some sort of picture of the universe only that we cannot image the entire universe as claimed in the title.

And yes, we would have to travel to way out past so many galaxies it's not even funny - if the edge of the universe can ever be found. We do not even have a clue where we are in the universe, only what we think based on what we are able to observe.

If the universe is expanding, and if theoretically we could reach the edge of it, and even cross it, where would we be? In the outer universe? and by universe i mean absolutely all galaxies etc in the 3rd dimension, im not talking about the multiverse.

the question your asking has been asked for all humanity, and never have we been sure of an answer, the debate over an answer continues your just now joining,

in essence, is the universe infinite or finite, we dont know yet,

if it is finite though then it is the closest to infinite that any finite thing could ever be,

the answer to this question has far reaching implications for all aspects of science.

it is almost as big a question as, are we with god, or godless,

in any case "we are all in this together", so lets just remember that for now.

Good God, I had no idea my head was so oval-shaped. Thanks for the heads-up.

As if I wasn't already self conscious enough.
