Idiots in the water...

Just came from Biloxi. While people gathered on the beaches to celebrate the Fourth, children played in the water... parents sun bathed face down in the sand... all the while BP workers cleaned up just a few hundred feet away.

I can not understand why people are so ignorant.

Before anyone says the beach looks empty, there were some people to the right, and the area the clean up workers are now was marked off as refuge for wild birds, further to the left you can see cars/people somewhat, further beyond was Casinos and more&more people lining the beaches.... also, only three [two shown here] photos were salvaged from a crappy camera phone. Sorry.



EDIT: The point of this thread is, people need to be aware the water is unsafe. I just wish at the very least parents would keep their kids out of the water.

I am stunned...

I live in Pensacola, when I drove to Biloxi, I saw in the Mobile Bay a lot of oil patches as well as several super tankers/tankers, at least two drill ships, and what I believe may have been "A Whale" on my way back (HUGE ship, dwarfed everything else in the bay, not docked but out in the water. Night was setting so I had bad visual references - it looked like her though)

The question is - should I go out and get photos/document Pensacola, Mobile, and Biloxi with my good camera? Or do I avoid exposure and let other people do it? I really do not want to breath this crap in, but I don't know.

EDIT: Not to get in it, but take photos of the bay, cleaning ships, etc at a distances, as well as at the beach.

The waters on the Mississippi coast have never been clear/blue & green. The water is almost always a brown murky color. I too drove the beach road from Waveland, MS to Biloxi, MS today. Granted water looked dirtier than normal. I probably saw between 500-700 BP workers on that stretch of beach, most sitting in the shade and the ones walking the beach, didn't appear to be picking up much of anything. The surreal part is as the poster stated, people wading and swimming in water with cleanup workers within 10' of them. Either the water is safe or not safe. I can't help but wonder if perhaps all the clean up workers were a "good showing" for the public on a holiday where most people would be at the beach. I have a feeling that if you drive the same beaches tomorrow, there won't be as near as many workers.

Just my opinion.

Oh hell yeah! If I was down there, I would be documenting everything on camera. A picture can speak a thousand words, and it doesn't need translation either. Plaster them photos all over the internet. This is something people will need to be reminded of every day from now on, if anything is to be learned from this .. and not forgotten, like those other things I can't even remember any more.

Well I agree it isn't perfectly clear at all times, but it is not THAT murky. I visited that place several times before, it is far cleaner in prior year than now. It is to murky. There is a ton of oil stains on rocks. Etc. I apologize if I lead people to think the water was crystal clear. I meant that it wasn't THAT murky.

If I get the time I'll try to swing by Mobile so we can see the wonderful shipping and oil contaminated bay waters, provided they still are by the time I get time. No promises. It could be as late as 2 weeks from now before I can do that.

Please DO take photos if you can. Take a Respirator if you are concerned, but short-term exposure should be minimal. Just dont go for a dip and hang out for the weekend

Yes on the photos. Everybody needs to keep a camera with them so when you come across something you can take a picture.
