Would anyone have a good reference as to how to construct a homemade gas mask, especially if you have experience making one yourself.

Greatly appreciated...

a surplus finnish gas mask can be bought for around $15 from cheaper than dirt.com and a 60mm to 40mm adapter can be bought for around $5
and new NATO canisters cost only about $10

You would do better to use an israeli type. they use nato cans. If you can find one, get it with the can to the side (its easier to shoot with if you had to defend yourself in war time).

essentially, you cant make one. You can try and you can die. Ask the "tommies" from ww1.

I know someone with an Israeli one. One thing he learned while using it: always make sure that the filter is in before you put it on. He didn't and almost suffocated.

all u really need is something covering your mouth and nose and what i use would be a filter for a home heat/AC unit it collects particles and other harmful air/gas. u can cut these filters to use with what ever size u need. keep in mind this would be only used for last min... i would recommend using something specifically designed for ridding your body of harmful toxins

It won't help. When the gas cloud comes, it will be so fast you won't even know what hit you.

Have you seen how quickly the deer succumb to gas from fissures at Yellowstone? It's instantaneous. There will be no warning.

I have recently been thinking about Chemical Suits, mostly because of the reports of "oil rain" around the Gulf Coast. I think it is important to recognize the importance of protecting exposed areas of flesh from potential toxins. I did see some available on Ebay but keeping with the DIY theme (for at least Oil Rain) how well would a good quality rain suit manage?

Well when I get the money I might buy something from this site.

approvedgasmasks.com...

It has suits and the highest quality are these items.

approvedgasmasks.com...

and

approvedgasmasks.com...

I may buy something from that site, but necessarily those items.

Edited to add: there is a lot of other stuff on the site as well, it also shows which gas masks are faulty.

Good links. I appreciate the info.

I know it's a bit of a weird question but i've been stocking up on rice, beans, canned chicken, bottled water, sea salt, Potassium Iodide, matches, batteries, a couple extra propane tanks, and all basic medical supplies (band aids, hydrogen peroxide, soaps, toothpaste, etc.), and 12 gauge bird & buckshot shells.

I'm trying to come up with a list of other items that would be needed or helpful so i'll keep investigating...

I too saw some gas mask on ebay but my husband said that they would not work for anything from the gulf...like benzene etc. He said I would have to buy a respirator type mask that are really pricey. Does this sound true to you survivalists out there? I do not know anything about this type of thing, but I would feel safer if we had some protective face gear if any gasses should blow this way. Thanks for any help!!!

Building one from scratch is a VERY bad idea. If you have no clue what your doing, which i know is true because your asking for advice on how to build one, then your best bet is to actually buy one made from a good company. Keep in mind however that some things actually will penetrate the gas masks, such as ammonia vapors. Avoid buying from surplus, since a lot of them are there because they are either ineffective, recalled or outdated. Check out these websites for some info you may not know

www.nationalterroralert.com...

and

www.armygasmasks.com...

My advice would be to buy the wide lens ones. Since it provides a better perception advantage then the 2 hole masks. Trust me, the wider is better. Also as a side note: You should get training on how to properly wear the mask and try it on more then once. Make sure it properly fits you by having either a professional inspect it or ask a soldier in person. When you wear the mask, its best if you have a clean shaven face. Those little hairs on your chin can prevent or even void the entire mask from protecting you at all. Need any more help, just ask

Sorry i would have answered your question above instead of double posting. Your husband is right. Ebay masks are usually crap, especially the wholesale or surplus ones. Refer to my previous post above for 2 good links with info. Respirators are the way to go but very costly like stated before. For the everyday needs i would say go with a military grade mask with 2 spare filters. Those filters don't last too long in a real attack or accident. One thing people don't think about is the fact that if an attack did happen...its not like you would already be wearing your mask. Nobody walks around all day long with a mask on waiting for it (Unless your military
). So even if it did happen, how would you know? Would you even have it near you? You can't always see the airborne pathogens coming at you. So unless your going to carry it with you, its pretty pointless to have one. That is of course your a paranoid freak like me who wears a bullet proof vest everyday and carries survival tools all the time on my person

you can get a cheap gas mask on eBay and buy new filters. I have 5 and some nbc suits still in shrink wrap.
I dont see why you could not use a full body water proof suit as a nbc suit. it is better than nothing at all!
