Florida Releases June 25, 2010 Gulf Oil Spill Situation Update

The Gov Monitor released this update today...

On June 25 NOAA places the oil plume 7 miles from Pensacola, 75 miles from Mexico Beach and 293 miles from St. Petersburg.

NOAA trajectories indicate possible shoreline impacts along the western panhandle through Sunday mainly west of Destin.

All Florida Beaches Remain OPEN! Pensacola Beach is open but some areas are closed to swimming and wading until further notice.

I have an employee that was in Destin this past week. Very limited spotty oil was apparent, and they did swim, and there was sea life.

Pertinent things that she noticed though, and I have heard similar things for over a month now:
1. The "emerald" quality to the water was gone. It is much darker than normal.

2. The beaches and hotels are not busy, more like the off-season than the tourist season.

3. There is a definite smell in the air and it gets worse the closer to the water that you get. It is a mixture of exhaust (rotten egg, H2S) smell, and solvent (WD40, light oily).

Things are still "ok" here along the Panhandle, but they are deteriorating fast! Losing the beaches and the sea life is going to be bad enough, but the economic impact this is already having on Florida is catastrophic! The State recently inacted a hiring freeze, they stopped all excess spending that was already budgeted and approved, and they are looking at cutting positions long before we get to our next Congressional session. These actions are unprecendented for June. This is normally the loosest time of the year for State Government, because we just got through a budget session, and we just got our new budgets. To have budget cutting and emergency freezes immediately after a budget is approved for the year is evidence to the expected severity of the financial situation at hand!

Of the few folks on the East Coast of Florida I've talked to, most seem to have their heads in the sand as to what might happen to them....

But as you can see from posts like this from NC there is very likely a river of oil already running along the eastern shelf...
