Military trucks with strange logo

Well I do not have a military background so forgive me if these are some kind of standard military vehicles but I have never seen these insignias. I photographed them on I-94 near Detroit Metro Airport. Also be aware these were taken over a year ago, I just happened to came across them again going through some pictures on the hard drive.

I believe that 's the red crescent, instead of the red cross, both are for helping out folks...

Now why they would be in Detroit? could the vehicles have been manufactured there and are headed out for shipment?


edit to add, they look like military, are they using the crescent instead of the cross in their operations in Afghanistan or are they for use by the Red Crescent in their humanitarian efforts?

Im sure they were probably manufactured here I just wasn't sure about the red crescent.

The red cresent is the Iranian equivalent of our red cross.

Iran, or the middle east in general such as Iraq and afghanistan?

Simple answer is there red cross vehicles.

The Red Crescent emblem was first used by the International Committee of the Red Cross volunteers during the armed conflict between the Ottoman Empire and Russia (1877–1878). The symbol was officially adopted in 1929, and so far 33 Islamic states have recognised it.

The Red Cross and The Red Crescent are both the same foundation/organisation, operating under different names/logos in different zones around the world. Generally using the cross in Christian and Crescent in Islamic states, they also have the Red Crystal for Israel, and 'The Red Lion and Sun' for Iran.

That being the case these are unlikely to be destined for Iran, more likely another Islamic country, but that could be anywhere - Middle East, Africa, Eastern Europe/Central Asia, South East Asia...?

Gotcha, I figured there was a simple answer.

Clearly Red Cresent ambulances being shippeed probably to Afganistan or Iraq.

It is possible that these are being made for the Iraqi or Afghani military. I wouldn't get too weirded out over it.

Most things like this have a proper explanation.

But yes, the Red Crecent is the Moslem version of the Red Cross as far as I know.

So Detroit probably got a contract to supply the trucks. It stands to reason that this would be so since we are actively engaged with two Moslem nations.

The Red Crescent nor the Red Cross tootle around battlefields in cammo'd ambulances. In fact, they try their best to be as obvious as possible (remember the the last Israeli incursion into Lebanon when the complaint was made that Israeli pilots shot the hell out of a highly visible Red Crescent ambulance like this one).

Another problem is the the really big red crescent. Beginning in WWII the Germans began to shoot at US ambulances marked with the big red cross. It didn't happen often but it happened. Korea was worse. That big red cross became a target so it came off. From that point on ambulances tried their best to blend in with whatever they were around. That's why Medics and Corpsmen no longer wear the red cross arm band.

This is something different. It's obviously meant for the battlefield but those things aren't for the Red Crescent. They work in the rear not the front.

Those are military ambulances that are for use in the mid-east or an African nation. Many of them are sold to foreign nations around the world. I am used to seeing them in Africa quite a bit during tours over there.

Could also be part of some American foreign aid package to some middle eastern country.

I work for the company that builds these ambulances. I helped build many of these and this is a TACOM contract for the Afghanistan Army. Many were painted tan also. Very well built.

I just saw a few of these on my way to work today. I did take pictures and they were the tan trucks. No sense in posting the pics but it looks like they are manufactured here in the Detroit region. I knew what the symbol was but I was a bit surprised seeing them. I just didn't think we made those here..
