The Likud Central Committee voted Thursday overwhelmingly in favor of continuing the expansion of building in Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria with the expiration of the ten month settlement building freeze requested in September.
The political implications of the committee vote appeared minimal, with Likud reiterating its previous support for settlement expansion in a non-binding measure. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu was notably absent from Thursday’s controversial meeting of the Likud Central Committee at the Tel Aviv Fairgrounds.
Netanyahu’s associates said he did not believe it was necessary for him to attend the event because he had already said on multiple occasions that he did not intend to renew the freeze. Sources close to him said it would be inappropriate for him to attend the event two weeks ahead of his meeting in Washington with US President Barack Obama.
