Hello,

I am planning to visit Australia. I was wondering whether anyone could tell me what is worth visiting in Australia? Something less mainstream would be good, where it's not so packed with tourists

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Well as an Australian that has been to every state, and has lived in 5 different states, I can say avoid the east coast, lol

A few good non-mainstream things to see:

Litchfield National Park...like Kakadu, but less tourists, less crocodiles and you dont need a 4 wheel drive to see the major attractions. Less crocodiles also means its a lot safer to swim

The bungle bungles in northwest Western Australia

www.kimberleyaustralia.com...

Margaret River wine region (less people than the Barossa Valley in South Australia)

www.margaretriver.com...

Daintree Rainforest..watch out for Cassowary's

www.daintreerainforest.com...

There's plenty more too....so many I cant list them all. The best places are away from the more populated east coast, so avoid the big cities like Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane if you want a REAL Australian holiday

Also, IMO, the Northern Territory, Far north and east Queensland and Western Australia are the most beautiful and impressive parts of our country....

A great list, thanks! I assume the east coast is dangerous and I'll leave it at that

Sorry but you have a misconception there.

EVERYTHING in Australia is dangerous and will kill you with just a glance.....:shk:

My advice is to find a guide, a very old guide, and go from there..

Lol, the east coast isnt dangerous...its nothing like the Northern parts or the desert!!

Its just ultra boring. Its really built up, and heavily populated, so its like visiting the US pretty much. If you want to see the true Australia, you have to visit the REAL outback

I would absolutely consider visiting the Whitsundays in north Queensland. While parts of it are somewhat touristy, such as Airlie Beach, there are areas, and islands in particular, that are more secluded and just as breathtaking. For example, South Molle Island as opposed to Hamilton Island.

[atsimg]http://files.abovetopsecret.com/images/member/9872c035b4e5.jpg[/atsimg]

South Molle is smaller but has a vastly smaller number of tourists than Hamo, and it is just as gorgeous. Although, Hamilton as well as a number of other islands in the region would be worth your while to check out, even if they are a bit more busy. It would have everything to do with what time of year you decide to travel. You may have to do a bit of research.

Additionally, there is the Atherton Tablelands and surrounding north Queensland areas.

(I have an overwhelming suspicion that I have swam under this waterfall on a trip up to Atherton).

Paronella Park also is incredible.

Port Douglas

There are so many places

I'm sorry, I'm into beaches and tropical north Q has some of the most spectacular [atsimg]http://files.abovetopsecret.com/images/member/3c8a5d658f5c.gif[/atsimg]

where it's not so packed with tourists... in the Australian outback! Because rarely, not at all, hardly any people do visit the outback.

Yup, there's a lot of nothing dotted with a little something up here.

Did Tom Price to Karratha and back again in a day, magnificent scenery.

Long day though!

There are MANY places, "unknown tourist spots" in West Australia. I will also post some West Australian tourist websites/photos for you.

Anyone remember that moron of a lady that went to Exmouth and drove out...well East...ended up shredding her tyres in the middle of the desert on the spinifex? And then she stood on the roof of her car to get a mobile phone signal to so she could call emergency services? And then half the emergency vehicles alos got their tyres shredded on the way out to save her? Costing the WA government hundreds of thousands of dollars?

Was she American?

Just kidding

If you come here make sure you follow peoples advice....our country is not like other countries. One wrong turn and it may kill you

Just thought I should mention that...be safe and you will love it here!

I think Ozweatherman and Chadwickus can assist with
your attire, when you travel the range of the outback.

You'll need a sturdy, wide-brimmed hat with corks
strategically placed around the rim. It helps to show
the habitants of the area of where you visit, how much
beer you can swill back!

A boomerang is handy to send and receive messages
I personally don't know how they work, but I guess a
Paul Hogan movie may help.

The final parts are a 4x4 and a pack of beer... not Fosters,
that's a no-no. I'm sure Chadwickus can help there.

There was some discussion of having a large serrated knife,
but again, that may have been a 'Hogan' influence.

Hope this helps.
