My I Ching Reading for the Deep Water Horizon

"The I Ching is one of the oldest Ancient Chinese Texts. The book contains a divination system comparable to Western Geomancy or the West Aftrica Ifá System. In Western Cultures and modern East Asia, it is still widely used for this purpose.

The standard text originated from the ancient text 古文經 transmitted by Fei Zhi (c. 50 BC-10 AD) of the Han Dynasty... During the Warring States period this text was re-interpreted as a system of Cosmology and Philosophy that subsequently became intrinsic to Chinese Culture. It centered on the ideas of the dynamic balances of opposites, the evolution of events as a process, and acceptance of the inevitability of change."

If you are unfamiliar with the I Ching, it is a series of 64 Hexagrams which consists of six vertical broken or unbroken lines representing; yin or yang, 6 or 9, or SQUARE or a CIRCLE. Each Hexagram consists of two out of eight Primary (outer) Trigrams and two Nuclear (Inner) Trigrams.

Ch'ien the Creative, K'un the Receptive, Chên the Arousing, K'an the Abysmal,
Kên Keeping Still, Sun the Gentle, Li the Clinging, and Tui the Joyous.

Each Trigram symbolizes their own Attribute, Image, Family Member, Animal, Color, Body Part, Direction, and others. The Attributes for the Trigrams that arise will be brought up as they come along.

There are many different ways to draw up Hexagrams for situations such as flipping coins, or drawing yarrow stalks. Those are just the most common ways of doing so. Carl Jung coined the term Synchronicity to describe how this works.

I'm going to choose the Starting Hexagram for this reading and introduce the next Hexagrams as the Nuclear Trigrams determine. I'm to going to present the Hexagrams, their Images, Names, and what the Lines mean. (cited from the Wilhelm/Baynes translation of the I Ching)

Below every Image, Judgment, and Lines I'm going to offer my own interpretation of the I Ching for the situation of the Deep Water Horizon. Also links as they come up as necessary for some interpretations.

So...

On the 57th day since the April 20th BP Oil Spill, Barack Obama addressed the United States about the Federal Governments plans to deal with the disaster.

After the address I decided consult the I Ching about the situation. I Started with the 57th Hexagram.

57. Sun / The Gentle (The Penetrating, Wind)

"Sun is one of the eight doubled trigrams. It is the eldest daughter and symbolizes wind or wood; it has for its attribute gentleness, which nonetheless penetrates like the wind or like growing wood with its roots.
The dark principle, in itself rigid and immovable, is dissolved by the penetrating light principle, to which it subordinates itself in gentleness. In nature, it is the wind that disperses the gathered clouds, leaving the sky clear and serene. In human life it is penetrating clarity of judgment that thwarts all dark hidden motives. In the life of the community it is the powerful influence of a great personality that uncovers and breaks up those intrigues which shun the light of day."

THE JUDGMENT
THE GENTLE. Success through what is small.
It furthers one to have somewhere to go.
It furthers one to see the great man.

“The hole of the well is small but success is met through certain interests’ perspectives.
It moves forces to react to the consequences of those interests.
People perish and descent to the next realm.”

THE IMAGE
Winds following upon the other:
The Image of THE GENTLY PENETRATING.
Thus the superior man
Spreads his commands abroad.
And carries out his undertakings.

“The Wind carries the ramifications of the spill towards inland.
More Perish due to contaminated and toxic air.
The wind spreads the contamination,
And carries the undertakings of the East.”

THE LINES
Six at the beginning means:
In advancing and in retreating,
The perseverance of a warrior furthers.

“The Disaster advances while civilians retreat.
The human intuition grows stronger.”

Nine in the second place means:
Penetration under the bed.
Priests and magicians are used in great number.
Good Fortune. No blame.

“The well penetrated beneath the sea bed,
Occult energy surrounds the incident.
Good for the Occult. No one is convicted.

Nine in the third place means:
Repeated penetration. Humiliation.

“Constant drilling for oil. Disaster Occurs.”

Six in the fourth place means:
Remorse vanishes.
During the hunt
Three kinds of game are caught.

“Sympathy of those responsible is no longer there.
Birds, Fish, and Humans was of life are threatened.”

Nine in the fifth place means:
Perseverance brings good fortune.
Remorse vanishes.
Nothing that does not further.
No beginning, but and end.
Before the change, three days.
After the change, three days.
Good fortune.

“The wealth of the guilty brings good fortune.
No sympathy by those.
No one is convicted.
No better conditions but dead zones.
(I can’t decipher the next two lines but they are in synchronicity with Before Completion (Hx. 64) and After Completion (Hx. 63).)

Nine at the top means:
Penetration under the bed.
He loses his property and his ax.
Perseverance brings misfortune.

“Drilling beneath the sea bed.
The rig explodes and workers perish.
Skipping safety steps brings the Disaster.”

Now we take the Nuclear Trigrams of Sun; Li the Clinging, Fire and Tui the Joyous, Lake. We get the 38th Trigram K'uei / Opposition.

This hexagram is composed of the trigram Li above, i.e., flame, which burns upward, and Tui below, i.e., the lake, which seeps downward. These two movements are in direct contrast. Furthermore, Li is the second daughter and Tui the youngest daughter, and although they live in the same house they belong to different men; hence their wills are not the same but are divergently directed. (Like Gas, Fire, over the Gulf)

THE JUDGMENT
OPPOSTION. In small matters, good fortune.

“In the Eyes of a Small Group the Situation could have Good Fortune.”

The LINES
Nine at the beginning means:
Remorse disappears.
If you lose your horse, do not run after it;
It will come back of its own accord.
When you see evil people,
Guard yourself against mistakes.

“The Small Group loses Sympathy for the “Small,”
The rig sinks, don’t collect the oil, karma will turn its wheel.
Out of Greed the Small Group makes, it’s Serfs Revolt.”

Nine in the second place means:
One meets his lord in a narrow street.
No Blame.

“People leave this realm due to a small well in a huge lake.
No one is convicted.”

Not a good beginning, but a good end.

One meets a like-minded man
With whom one can associate in good faith.

Six in the Fifth Place Means:
Remorse disappears.
The companion bites his way through the wrappings.
If one goes to him,
How could it be a mistake?

”Sympathy from TPTB never shows,
BP and The Gov’t of the U.S. lie and manipulate the truth.
The Citizens read their filtered news,
They believe what they’re told.”

Nine at the top means:
Isolated through opposition,
One sees one’s companion as a pig covered with dirt,
As a wagon full of devils.
First one draws a bow against him,
Then one lays the bow aside.
He is not a rover; he will woo at the right time.
As one goes, rain falls then good fortune comes.

“The Citizens feel betrayed,
They see their government as suppressive and misleading,
A facist state,
They rise against but the States forces surrender.
They aren’t quitters, and nature acts to protect the righteous”.

Now we take the Nuclear Trigrams of K’uei; K’an The Abysmal, Water and Li The Clinging, Fire. We get the 63rd Trigram Chi Chi / After Completion.

63. Chi Chi / After Completion

This hexagram is the evolution of T’ai PEACE (11). The transition from confusion to order is completed, and everything is in its proper place even in particulars. The strong lines are in the strong places, the weak lines in the weak places. This is a very favorable outlook, yet it gives reason for thought. For it is just when perfect equilibrium has been reached that any movement may cause order to revert to disorder. The one strong line that moved to the top, thus effecting complete order in details, is followed by the other lines, each moving according to its nature, and thus suddenly there arises again the hexagram P’I, STANDSTILL (12).
Hence the present hexagram indicates the conditions of a time of climax, which necessitate the utmost caution.

THE JUDGMENT
AFTER COMPLETION. Success in small matters.
Perseverance furthers.
At the beginning good fortune,
At the end disorder.

“After the Well is completed, drilling is successful in the beginning.
BP pushes the limits,
Then disaster occurs.”

They don’t completely act upon the incident;

Nine in the third place means:
The Illustrious Ancestor
Disciplines the Devil’s Country.
After three years he conquers it.
Inferior people must not be employed.

On the third year of the new executive England succeeds.
The Proletariat are in Dismay.”

Six in the fourth place means:
The finest clothes turn to rags.
Be careful all day long.

“The Most Glorious Country goes into another depression after a near economic collapse and recession.
Every citizen and their families are on their own guard.”

Nine in the fifth place means:
The neighbor in the east who slaughters an ox
Does not attain as much real happiness
As the neighbor in the west
With his small offering.

“England destroys the gulf,
And doesn’t feel the pain as the U.S.
With England Only Suffering slightly minor economic ramifications.”

Six at the top means:
He gets his head in the water. Danger.

“England’s well sinks, the Disaster Occurs. "

We we take the Nuclear Trigrams of Chi Chi; Li The Clinging, Fire and K’an The Abysmal, Water. We get the 64th Hexagram Wei Chi / Before Completion.

THE JUDGMENT
BEFORE COMPLETION. Success.
But if the little fox, after nearly completing the crossing,
Gets his tail in the water,
There is nothing that would further.

“Before 4/20 there is success,
But before the well is cleared,

THE IMAGE.
Fire over water:
The image of the condition before transition.
Thus the superior man is careful
In the differentiation of things.
So that each finds its place.

“Methane rises in the atmosphere from the Gulf.
The Step before the Climax of the Climax,
The Worlds Leaders are following their orders,
So everything follows their plan,”

THE LINES
Six at the beginning means:
He gets his tail in the water.
Humiliating.

“The Rig Sinks,
The People become Infurious.”

Nine in the second place means:
He brakes his wheels.
Perseverance brings good fortune.

“After their mistakes,
They bribe their way to innocence.”

Shock, thus to disciple the Devil’s Country.

“Paying their way through lobbying,
The blame is ignored.

The beginning of a new age occurs.”

Six in the fifth place means:
Perseverance brings good fortune.
No remorse.
The light of the superior man is true,
Good fortune.

“The people unite a bring upon a new era.
Thought they have to deal with the ramifications of the past, Time is going towards a positive direction.
The will of Nature will prevail.
Good tidings will be for the future.

Nine at the top means:
There is drinking of wine
In genuine confidence. No blame.
But if one wets his head,
He loses it, in truth.

“Celebration for the triumph,
Friends Gather in Collectivitiy.
But if Greed Works its will,
Pandora’s Box will Be Reopened.”

Note. The hexagram AFTER COMPLETIOIN represents a gradual transition from a time of ascent past a peak of culture to a time of standstill. The hexagram BEFORE COMPLETION represents a transition from chaos to order. This hexagram comes at the end of the Book of Changes. It points to the fact that every end contains a new beginning. Thus it gives hope to men. The Book of Changes is a book of the future.

P.S.: (OP’s notes: The Nuclear Trigrams of Wei Chi/ Before Completion, are K’an the Abysmal, Water and Li the Clinging Fire (The 63rd Hexagram Chi Chi), thus our situation comes into an infinite loop of yin and yang.

Now that I have highlighted the Hexagrams and the correlation of the Trigrams in between them that I drew up the other ones, I’m going to show the reading that I have correlated with the Deep Water Horizon Oil Disaster. I’m going to draw certain aspects of judgments and lines to pertain to this situation even though all of them do. Please feel free to add your interpretations of these Images, Judgments, and Lines.



This video is a good explanation of what was happening that caused the oil rig to sink. I organized these next verses a few days before I came across this video on Post Glacial Rebound. It seems to complement some of these verses really well.

The Wind carries water from the arctic shelves and places it in the gulf.
Since we are making the reservations below the sea bed hollow, the sea bed faults shift and become weaker. Thus the wind is carrying out (from underneath) the undertakings (goals) of the east (England).

“Coming joyousness is the lake’s misfortune.”

Would be profits for BP results in misfortune for the gulf.
The abysmal (water) contains a fortune (oil) for a pig (BP).
The water turns black as oil spills into the gulf and ruining the environment.
Drilling begins well until a disaster occurs.
