NEWS: Small Meteorite Hits House in NZ

A 1.3 kilogram meteorite came crashing through the roof of an Auckland New Zealand families living room. Luckily no-one in the family was injured as the rock came blasting through at 9:00 Saturday mourning


"There was just a huge explosion and we looked around and there was just dust everywhere," says Brenda Archer.

What they didn't expect to find was a very hot rock.

"I don't know what to make of it, it's unbelievable. I'm just glad no one was sitting on the couch because they just would have got absolutely crowned," she says.

The specialists were doubting at first but once they saw it they were convinced it was a meteorite.

There are several meteor showers that are scheduled for June with this being the first confirmed meteorite in the recent meteor reports from around the world.

That must be it, Aussie Bloke was flying in an airplane and droped it out of the plane to back up what he was saying.

Knowing that everyone would be safe, it would totally be worth it. To not just be able to witness the impact, but to have your very own space rock that travelled millions of light-years just to be with you. It would be like the stork coming and dropping off a little bundle of joy. It would be like finding a field of four leaf clovers.

It would also be worth a bundle of money...so it could be thought of as a blessing from heaven....lol

If one fell thru my house, at least I'd get a new roof.

Imagine having to call your insurance agent and telling them that a small meteorite landed in your livingroom and you need to file a claim.

Yeah, like rad said, there is a ton of money in those things.

Because of the way they were 'formed', they have a geological and molecular structure that amazes scientists.

If the government hasn't tried to 'confiscate' it for testing, which they cannot legally do, but can scare the family into thinking they can do, then this family could make a sale to NASA or another space agency. These rocks can be worth more than their weight in gold! Honestly, a tiny rock, just big enough to fit in the palm of your hand is almost guaranteed to be worth $10,000+ US! Imagine a 1.3 kilo rock! They have it made, man. But this makes you wonder.

I have a metorite, that I've just been hanging on to. It was weird. I saw a flash in my back yard one day, didn't think to much about it. A week later I was out there and saw this weird looking rock. There's no way this is an rock that can be found on earth. I remembered the flash, then put 2 and 2 together.

Time to make some $$$$!!

Well, Earth mass increases with hundreds of tons every day because of meteoroids so it's propable that there's "coincidenses" among them.
(like there might even be one pea in army's peasoup )

I'd like to see a real meteor land for once in my life and not one of those fake foam replicas in the museam. lol

So, can we say that this was a meteorite since it was recovered?

I doubt I'd report one to this board now unless I had recovered it and had it readily available to make use as a cosmic suppository for anyone who'd label me a hoax.


Still, I think that would be cool to find one; especially one which I saw hit. The new science center at the local community college has one that landed in Russia as their keystone. It a little larger than basketball size. They say that even though it gets hot on entry, once it hits, its still cold inside from being in deep space and it was recovered with a layer of frost shortly after it hit.
