This is not a new story, but I didn't see any threads on this here, and I thought that this was an interesting story that a lot of people here should see.

Any idea what might have happened?

Also, here is a wikipedia page containing other cases like this.

maybe this could lead to a new way of learning languages?and if somehow you dont need to meet a native speaker for you to speak the language maybe we can relearn dead forgotten languages? just fantasizing.

He didn't really know how to speak English fluently until it hit him.

Seriously this is amazing. I wonder what he was saying in English. He says he doesn't remember. I wonder what words came to him that he didn't know beforehand.

Amazing. Great story.

I've heard of a few theories...

one is that some parts of the language areas in our brain store things by meaning instead by actual word. So although we're used to one language on a very rare occassion it can switch up (not my idea, I just heard it once).

I've also heard that Buddha (Sidharta Gautama) could speak to a group of people who speak different languages and they could all understand him! So he was apparently able to speak in that "meaning" as stated above.

The other theory is that it could be what's called a "walk in." meaning the person actually died and a new soul took over the body. Very rare but I personally know 3 people who claim this has happened to them! (I'm into Psychology and the paranormal). One lady had to leave her family because she had such a different personality they just wouldn't accept her as their mom/wife!

I've heard it happening in hypnosis during past life regression as well. SOmeone starts speaking a language they have never known (in this life).

His physical injury may very well have allowed him to tap into the all-accessible collective unconscious, and enabled him to attain part of the universal information contained therein (in this case, the English language and accent). There is also the interesting possibility that he may have been experiencing a past-life regression.

Jacques Lacan's psychoanalytic theory contends that the unconscious is structured like a language.
The unconscious, Lacan argued, was not a more primitive or archetypal part of the mind separate from the conscious, linguistic ego, but rather, a formation every bit as complex and linguistically sophisticated as consciousness itself.
If the unconscious is structured like a language, Lacan argues, then the self is denied any point of reference to which to be "restored" following trauma or "identity crisis".

Unconscious Mind

While the personal unconscious is made up essentially of contents which have at one time been conscious but which have disappeared from consciousness through having been forgotten or repressed, the contents of the collective unconscious have never been in consciousness, and therefore have never been individually acquired, but owe their existence exclusively to heredity.
Whereas the personal unconscious consists for the most part of complexes, the content of the collective unconscious is made up essentially of archetypes. The concept of the archetype, which is an indispensable correlate of the idea of the collective unconscious, indicates the existence of definite forms in the psyche which seem to be present always and everywhere.

The Concept of the Collective Unconscious

If you percept human brain as a transmitter instead of an isolated computer then cases like this don't seem so strange since information is stored in higher planes of existence, hence outside of the physical body.

I bumped my head hard last Friday and it still hurts. I would love to have woken up and be able to speak fluent French
It would save me a lot of time!

Ok seriously....This phenomena has always interested me. How in the world does it happen? Why? Those are questions I hope one day will be answered. It is probably one the most amazing phenomena out there IMO. I first saw this appear on an episode of Unsolved Mysteries about 15years ago!

Thanks for sharing this story.

Pretty interesting and weird. I keep hearing about these strange stories.

Closest thing I've ever heard of to something similar to this was a few months ago I was reading about a British woman who had a severe migraine headache, when she woke up after sleeping it off she had a Chinese accent.

Doctors called it "Foreign Accent Syndrome"

This just in!

Stock for the parent company of Learn Spanish in 6 weeks plummets dramatically!

Stock in hammers, way way up.

I'm with the people who think it's probably a lie. It seems VERY unlikely that a blow to the heard would "re-arrange" things in such a way that would give knowledge. It would be like throwing paint at a canvas randomly and having it paint the Mona Lisa. It's possible(like walking through walls is technically possible), but not likely.

According to the articles in your OP he spoke english before the accident but with a heavy accent. Maybe his speech was slurred right after the accident, this could have masked his accent. Too boring?

According to my stepmother, when my father was deeply asleep, he often spoke in Russian - very strange coming from a Geordie (North East UK) who had never learnt Russian in his life!
