My Idea to Stop Oil Leak...

After watching Obama's speech and he asks for ideas from the citizens... I thought what the hell.

Below is the supposed leak.

My idea is pretty simple. Take an 8-ton-plus, highly stable magnet, fabricated to fit the design of the well head, and slowly drop it over the metal head allowing it to fit itself into place. The seal should be able to stop the flow.

I work in the MRI business so you can imagine why a magnet would be on the top of my mind.

Now it is time for the ATS community to tell me why this is a ridiculous idea.

You simply underestimate the power of that flow. The magnet might hold if something like that were placed, but trying to place it, in 5K' deep water, with thousands of pounds psi blowing out the end...the hand of God might shake a little trying to get it on!

That doesn't even begin to deal with the (more and more) real possibility that the casing has been breached below the surface, so a solid cap would not only be futile, but exacerbate the deeper problem

I agree with the above poster. The whole seafloor is in danger of caving in, so the last thing they want to do is put even more weight on there.

Very cool idea though!

I think the only solution is what they are going to try next, the relief wells.

That sounds like it could work, but like the other posters said, there is a lot of pressure coming out of that/those holes.
