Pictures from Chinese Media

I've been thinking alot lately why hasnt Obama appointed an American Oil company take charge of this spill at the expense of BP coupled over with a massive work force of volunteers that are given the means to work on this crisis billed to BP alongside support of National Guard air craft to lift people that want to help out of their respective states and air bases to the Gulf billed to BP. This would be good for Obama politically because it will give the illusion that he is in control and doing something about it whilst allowing people to have faith in the Good Ole' USA to fix this problem...

Its ironical these images coming out of China which has the most censorship in the world. Nonetheless, these images should be viewed by everyone.

Has Ulala seen these or he/she still got their head up their ass? These pics are disgusting, but I can find plenty of environmental damage in China which is worse in a way because they are continual problems, whether as the Gulf disaster is a relatively rare accident.

'A World Bank research study showed that in the period 2001-2005, 54 percent of China’s seven main rivers were deemed unsafe for human consumption.' A serious problem when you have the largest population.

I seriously don't think China has any sort of a moral high ground, nor could this be considered propaganda by them given their track record. I think this is just a case of reporting the facts (Makes a change).

This is indeed horrendous! I'm actually very pissed at humanity, especially the ones who possess the power to have done something like this. And, despite what is happening around them, all they seem to care about is dollar signs! Can I be permitted to curse on ATS, just this once?
The pictures to me, are a metaphor. It almost looks as if the Earth is bleeding. It's very impactful to me. Indeed; the earth is bleeding! We are the worst kind of parasite. The ones that are too dumb to realize that if we continue to harm the being that houses us....where the f*** are we gonna live?!?!?!?

To the people who say that we are all responsible; yes, this is true. But, only to a certain extent. The fat cats in this game we call life, have constructed things in such a way, that living outside of societal norms is difficult and can even land you in jail! They truly are, evil geniuses.

And to the folks who say "Why is this coming from China?" "What is their agenda with this propaganda?" I say to you, stfu! At this point, does it matter where the news is coming from? The truth sure as hell isn't coming from America, the very country you're trying to defend, so, please...if it's not relevant to the topic at hand, do not bring it up!

These are not just snapshots.

These are truly photographic journalism. Phenomenal. A word need not be spoken.

Very moving. I'm glad they exist. I hope the world sees them.

I'm bored of this typical yankee over-reaction just because it has happened 'at home' rather than half way round the world. Boo frigging hoo. Other nations have had to deal with it before and none of those have whined half this much. The gulf spills in '91 and the Amoco Cadiz spring most readily to mind.

The well blew out, the operation to contain it failed, it won't stop gushing until the relief well is drilled which could take some time. Simple.

As to the usual "big oil is evil" brigade, get a life and get a clue. I keep seeing this unsubstantiated crap about "profits at any cost" yet have any of the people who say this crap ever worked for an oil major? Generally not or they would know what type of environment these people (especially shipping and offshore elements) work in.

In the main, oil majors will stick to the letter of the law when it comes to procedures. If there is a regulation, there is a work procedure conforming to it. Maybe the finger of blame needs to be pointed at your own regulations, though knowing what I do about US legislation where there is even the slimmest potential for marine pollution, then I don't think there is any problems there either.

# happens, people died, the company will lose a lot of money but survive and a load of people get to go through the whole bleeding-heart, hand-wringing, finger pointing # that they enjoy so much.

Stop berating Obama for "doing nothing" because there is nothing he can do. "We're going to take the operation off BP's hands." yeah, that will work, because you have way more experience, expertise and contacts than BP don't you? Nope, the containment efforts are in the best hands, you guys just concentrate on the clean up.

As for the sea life and those poor, poor birds... I honestly couldn't give a damn. Controversial point of view these days where the wellbeing of a dumb animal plays much higher on the conscience of westerners than the sufferring of humans who simply happen not to live nearby. The birds will breed again, and things will get back to normal. It certainly won't take the hundreds of years people are bandying about willy nilly either. Sennen Cove is a great example; decimated by the Torrey Canyon disaster, situation made worse by bungled cleanup efforts and its now one of the nicest beaches in England and a great place to go surfing.

PS. Never worked for BP, but have worked for other oil majors and know from friends who work at BP that their policies and procedures are almost identical.

PPS. Glad to see the anti-British rhetoric seems to have stopped. BP is about as British as British Columbia. It used to be owned by the British government, but then so did your country. Following such ridiculous logic, they are our beaches to mess up anyway.

Nearly identical? Wrong. Is that why BP has racked up more than 700X the amount of safety violations as compared to some of their competitors? I think not.

The OP link cannot be accessed from China. It is not Chinese media. A Chinese media site that cannot be accessed by people in China is surely a world's first!

Please provide links of Chinese media sites that are hosting the pictures.

These photos aren't taken by "chinese media". These photos aren't unusual on the web or on different news outlets! Most of them are taken by AP (Associated Press) or Getty Images and have been featured on your very own The Boston Globe - The Big Picture. (an awesome photo journalist section of The Boston Globe)

I'm not even American and I knew I had seen these photos before on a various different international news outlets. Check your facts before you rile yourself up.

i've seen many of those photos several times now. It's funny how often these images get reprinted and passed around. It kinda downplays the potential severity, IMO, because all we see are the SAME images of the SAME sea turtle and pelican and fish over and over.

They've been out for a while now.
