Military Testing Jamming Device- Coast Guard Warns Mariners Not to Rely on GPS or Ce

The Department Of Homeland Security has announced the disruption of the GPS system and phone use off the East coast June 11 through the 20th. Is this test tied to any other event that might make it necesary for the Goverment to make sure that accurate location and reporting of a event that is has occured or will occur in the next nine days can't be reported easily? Or is this a test to make sure that they can cover up an event by shutting down communications?

Cell Phones May Be Jammed By Military Test

WNCN-TV5:45 p.m. EDT June 11, 2004 - Boaters will be unable to rely on Global Positioning System equipment and possibly cell phones this weekend.

The Department of Defense is testing electronic jamming equipment that could affect cell phones and GPS systems on the immediate North Carolina coastline to about 50 miles out to sea.

The interference could go as far south as Florida.

Boaters should have maps to chart their courses and VHF radios to communicate on the water.

Thats a very strange, even dangerous thing to do. I really cant think of a single good reason to conduct this experiment. Surely it could have been conducted in a virual enviroment or even done at one of the numerous isolated bases that the U.S. military is fond of. Taking out the G.P.S cover for the East coast seems a bit radical.

It is probably a test of some navy radar/ECM equipment.

Think about it, the US knows every little gory detail about GPS and can selectively degrade it's signal at anytime of it's choosing.

The only logical "test" would be something unrelated that may cause enough interference to cause greater than expected error/noise.

There's no reason the US would have to do it in North Carolina - in fact all logic says they simply should not.

Not only do they disrupt their citizens' communications, they disrupt major commercial businesses, they endanger thousands of lives, they disrupt their own major communications, it is completely stupid.

In a case such as this - there has to be an ulterior motive. Think about it - why not off the southwest coast of South America? Why not off Hawaii? The US has control over both areas, but they chose to do this test where it will disrupt the American heart.

gps jamming wont cause any real problem, youre over reacting here.

There are lots of reasons do it in that area.

For example, what if they are testing a radar system to detect large missiles. The only places the US has that can launch is Vandenberg on the west coast and a couple of places on the east (An island in VA, Cape Canaveral). That would severly limit the options for testing.

And if it is some Jamming/ECM system there would be tons fo Intel concerns that far outweigh any temporary degredation to civilian use. In that case the natural place would be as close as possible to the continental US

GPS is a Military system to begin with. It is paid for, maintained, and primarily used by the US military, although the entire world benifits from its use.
The GPS signal and location you recieve are purposely scrambled. Locations "float" by design, and are moved at random, sometimes by thousands of feet.
The only group that recieves true accurate location is the US MIlitary and whoever the MIlitary allows.

Could it be anything to do with this.

(Hampton Roads, VA, May 28th, 2004, 7:24 a.m.) They've been our closest allies in the war on terror. And Thursday they announced they're sending more troops to Iraq. But over the next two days, Britain will also be landing thousands of troops here in Hampton Roads.

Military reporter Stacy Davis has more on this "British Invasion." From a distance, it looks like any other gray U.S. Navy ship. But take a closer look, these are no Americans. They're commandos and sailors of the British Royal Navy onboard her majesty's ship Albion. Colonel. Jeremy Robbins, Deputy Landing Force Commander tells us, "We probably look a little different, we've got different uniforms, we speak differently, but I like to think we've got the same ethics that bind us all with the professional approach we take to the profession of arms." The profession of arms will bring 19 foreign ships to Hampton Roads.

Over the next few weeks they'll be practicing war fighting with the U.S., storming the beaches of camp Lejeune North Carolina. But its not the first time the Union Jack has flown into our area. And its not just for exercises with their favorite ally, our staunchest supporter in the war on terror. But talk of war will be put aside at least for memorial day weekend. These Brits will be getting a taste of Tidewater. Rhiannom Clegg of the HMS Albion says she will be doing plenty of shopping while they are here as well as enjoying the nice weather. For hundreds of years they ruled the ocean, but today the Royal Navy says it stands in awe of the U.S., happy to share the blue with the red, white and blue.

"We like to think we started it off, we've had 800 years start on the U.S. Navy and frankly wherever there's water in the world hope you'll find a British person afloat on it." comments one sailor. There is another difference between our navies. The Brits can drink beer aboard their ships! Each sailor is allowed two cans a day and the female sailors can choose wine if they wish.

Tests like this occur on a regular basis. The reason for the warning on this one is because it may disrupt GPS and cell systems. While there's some inconvenience, there's no danger involved. They could have done this without warning but that may have created panic. Quite frankly, I'm glad they're testing the system. There's nothing like a real test to see how it works in the real world. Virtual envvironment testing is fine, but when it comes to national defence, I'll go with the real thing.
