You are probably right.

I thought the human species would be wiped out by World War III, an astroid even alien invasion but by oil?

Looks to me that this is going to play out to be a possible mass species extinction.

I hope I'm wrong and look stupid five years from now, but I don't know, my gut tells me differently.

I really hope I'm wrong on this one.

reply to post by Danbones"There's a lot at risk here," said Jane Lubchenco, who heads the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. She noted that 40 percent of the coastal wetlands in the continental United States are in Louisiana. "Ninety-seven percent of commercial fish and shellfish in the Gulf depend on estuaries and wetlands during their life cycle," she said.

Thanks for the clarification Danbones. Another problem is the wetland marshes in Louisiana.

the safe level for benzine
is 1 ppm
it has been measured at
3.4 ppm

Benzine should not be confused with benzene or benzyne. Benzine is a mixture of alkanes, e.g., pentane, hexane, and heptane, whereas benzene is a cyclic, aromatic hydrocarbon, C6H6. Likewise, petroleum ether should not be confused with the class of organic compounds called ethers, which contain the R-O-R functional group.

During the Second World War some extermination camps experimented by killing people with benzine injections.

We also have Benzene

EPA has set 5 ppb as the maximum permissible level of benzene in drinking water. EPA has set a goal of 0 ppb for benzene in drinking water and in water such as rivers and lakes because benzene can cause leukemia. EPA estimates that 10 ppb benzene in drinking water that is consumed regularly or exposure to 0.4 ppb in air over a lifetime could cause a risk of one additional cancer case for every 100,000 exposed persons. EPA recommends 200 ppb as the maximum permissible level of benzene in water for short-term exposures (10 days) for children.

EPA requires that the National Response Center be notified following a discharge or spill into the environment of 10 pounds or more of benzene.

OSHA regulates levels of benzene in the workplace. The maximum allowable amount of benzene in workroom air during an 8-hour workday, 40-hour workweek is 1 ppm. Because benzene can cause cancer, NIOSH recommends that all workers wear special breathing equipment when they are likely to be exposed to benzene at levels exceeding the recommended (8-hour) exposure limit of 0.1 ppm. www.eco-usa.net...

Note the Bold Anyone working in clean up needs a resperator.

Benzene is a clear, colorless and highly flammable aromatic liquid that evaporates quickly into the air, and can dissolve in water. It is formed from both natural processes and human activities; natural sources of benzene include volcanoes and forest fires.

Benzene is present in crude oil, gasoline and cigarette smoke. It is industrially used as a solvent in paints and other chemicals and products such as dyes, detergents, nylon, plastics, drugs and pesticides. Benzene is widely used in the United States; it ranks in the top twenty chemicals for production volume and makes up about one percent of every gallon of gasoline.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has determined that benzene is a human carcinogen, and can cause various forms of cancer from prolonged exposure. According to the IARC, benzene is often considered "the mother of all carcinogens," as a large number of carcinogens have structures that include benzene rings. Occupational studies of workers exposed to high levels of benzene show association with leukemia cancer; including acute myelogenous leukemia, acute lymphocytic leukemia, and chronic myelogenous leukemia. Benzene-related leukemias have been reported to develop in as short as nine months, and can remain dormant for as long as 25 years after initial exposure.

Even a small amount of benzene exposure can cause temporary nervous system disorders, immune system depression and anemia. Short term affects include skin, eye, and respiratory tract irritation, headache, stomach irritation, drowsiness and dizziness. High levels of exposure can result in a rapid heart rate, excessive bleeding, tremors, vomiting, unconsciousness and death. Benzene can cause harmful effects on bone marrow, and can cause a decrease in red blood cells leading to myelofibrosis and myelodysplastic syndrome.

I think your concerns are most relevant, but are you sure the safe levels are 5-10 parts per billion or is it 5-10 parts per million? if its per million, then the levels of 1200 per billion aren't fatal (not to minimise the catastrophe). Just trying to understand how bad this is.

It's ppb according to Lindsey Williams quoting the EPA

The real issue now is the people that are working to clean this up. They are being told they cannot wear resperators.

I have dug into this with the County HAZMAT Coordinator and he has the same stance I do. Although the PPB or PPM my not be to the danger level.
We are dealing with chronic exposure and workers need protection.

Also the toxic gasses we are talking about are heavier then air
depending on the circumstance
so down in a low spot the concentrations can be way higher than what is being measured

A bunch of chinese people died a few years ago when a sewer pipe burst in a sink hole while the people were working down in it.
the Hydrogen sulfide killed the people who jumped down into the hole to pass the first batch of unconsious people out

fart gas bad
thats why it "stinks"

Not to beat this to death (no pun intended) but thats my point. The level it starts affecting you is 5-10 parts per Million. She says 5-10 parts per billion is harmful which is not the case.

When will it become apparent that something is very wrong? How long until people get sick because of these chemicals?

well that crack certainly explains the smelly gas
and how if it were plugged
it would just Burp out somewhere else
*sigh*
we are in deep doo doo

For the longest time now I've been trying to make people aware of the fact that a large proportion of this leak is liquefied natural gas: 40 to 60%, depending on who you ask.

So far, at least 10 BILLION cubic feet of methane has entered the Gulf.

Let that sink in a minute.

Where do you think the stuff goes?

Dr. Samantha Joye of the University of Georgia reported that her team found methane levels 10,000 times normal in some of the waters they sampled.

For the technical details, background and developments check this thread:

Gulf spill: is the methane a bigger problem than the oil?

Great

More fear mongering

As I recall pompei eruption was awful but did not destroy the earth. This too shall pass. This is not a world ending event, its not to relieve pressure on yellowstone. It's an oil spill that will not even be on the radar in 10 years. Come on people, quit hoping for your end!

Yes, that's scarier than most anything to me. I hate being patronized that way. I believe we can handle the truth far better than they think we can.

I'm getting sick of this trite. Yes, some of the threads are a bit dramatic, but let's a clear something up, shall we?

No one here wants the world to end. In case you missed the point, most people are gravely concerned with the ongoing, I say again, ongoing ecological disaster that is yet to have any hope of being stopped.

Spill would imply that something broke, and that a finite amount of oil spilled into the ocean. Such as a tanker "spill". This is not a spill, this is an ongoing oil leak, or an eruption if you will, from a rather colossal natural oil well. This is a colossal disaster that will not soon be forgotten "in 10 years". This "spill" will continue into the years, because it will not be stopped.

It will never be stopped. I do not fathom how, in any possible way, shape or form, this can be stopped. If we get to the point of using a nuclear detonation to cover the leak with a sea floor collapse, then I can only hope the leak doesn't do as it already is doing, and that is just simply erupt elsewhere.

This is all evidence of something far greater than many people are willing to comprehend.

No, it isn't the end of the world, but it's the end of the world as we know it. This will change the world forever.

Well I am no way hoping for the End. However being directly involved in the response they're things that the public and the workers are not being told. That is the point of this discussion here. This oil spill has the potental to affect the entire atlantic basin. The oil that is leaking is leaking from one of the largest reserves ever tapped. This spill has the potental to get far worse.

Instead of griping about fear mongering how about putting your .02 in where it counts by adding to the real issue here.

Getting the word out so others can prepare should they need to evacuate.

Yup, we are doomed. No exaggeration at all. How outrageous this circus is. And our president and the executives of BP are are allowing no one, I mean no one to help in this gloomy situation. How does BP dictate what we do in our own waters?! EFF them. We need to do what we must in a fashionably fast way without repercussions from the government. GD!

As 2012 approaches, we are seeing a ton of bad signs. From earthquakes killing thousands and thousands to this and that and now this Oil Spill. It does make you wonder if the end of days scenario is actually happening.

I once thought that the whole end of days/doomsday/2012 stuff was gonna be a self fulfilling prophecy type of ordeal - However, I am not so sure anymore.

Thanks for the heads up and another fine thread
I just hope that we can come up with something that works to stop this leak before we all end up very dead! Whatever it takes. I know! Let's plug the well using all the BP executives and politicians it takes till it stops the flow! S&F.
