Global protest planned over BP's handling of oil disaster

edition.cnn.com

Environmentalists plan to stage a worldwide protest against BP on Saturday as the petroleum giant takes hits from politicians and Gulf residents.

Worldwide BP Protest Day claims demonstrations will take place in more than 50 cities across five continents from Pensacola, Florida, to Christchurch, New Zealand.

"Let the world know YOU care," says a flyer on the group's Facebook page, which translates BP's initials to mean British Predator. "We need to let BP know that we are NOT okay with what they are putting in OUR oceans."

People in outrage is what it may take to get BP on its knees and start answering questions and providing the data they are obviously hiding.

I am from the UK and I am 100% behind getting BP to pay up for this massive diabolical mistake.

The world stands to suffer from yet another corporate tragedy that only money ever seems to fix... This time it is going to take a heck of a lot more than just money.

Yes, many British could stand to lose their pensions. Yes, the UK itself could be brought very close to being on its knees in the global market and, IMO, it rightly deserves it for being so reliant on such a corporation, along with many others.

A protest on a global scale MUST be listened to this time. The last time there was a global protest, the governments did not listen and a war continues to rage and young men continue to die over a political issue that many disagree with and have reasons to doubt as to why we fight.

This fight, the fight against BP and the huge clean up of spilt oil, is a fight we must all engage in. We all have to stand up and say our bit and let it be known that we cannot and will not let these mega corporations rule any longer.

Time and time again we have been dealt the death blow, but this blow has hit the entire world very deeply and the scar is going to be long and deep.

For once, those who many sometimes criticise are actually stepping forward and making comments that we would not usually hear from them,

"BP misrepresented what their technology could do," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Friday. "They misrepresented the amount of oil that was being spewed forth into the Gulf and continued to do so."

but this comment from the British PM is just typical. Typical in its support for a corporation that brings money into the coffers;

"The prime minister explained that he was frustrated and concerned about the environmental damage caused by the leak, but made clear his view that BP is an economically important company in the UK, US and other countries," the spokesman said in a news release.

"He said that it is in everyone's interests that BP continues to be a financially strong and stable company."

It is in everyones interest that this company stops operating and gets on with fixing this terrible mess. Money should not come into the factor here. It should go without saying that this environmental disaster should have action taken immediately.

James Carville, Democratic strategist, calls for arrests to be made (as seen in the video on news page linked), and rightly so, especially if data and evidence is being held back or delayed in being provided. He claims the louisana coast is being invaded and the invasion needs to be stopped.
