Well I've been here a couple of weeks now and thought it was about time I got round to saying hello

I stumbled across ATS by serendipity, and decided to stay as I like the quality of the discussions and the wide range of interesting, alternative topics. I hope I can contribute something of value while I'm here.

A little about myself ...

I've a background in science education, 25+ years as a technician, and I love music, history and exploring mysterious ideas and places.

I live in a beautiful village in Yorkshire, England and my avatar is the White Rose of York.

My user name is after the song by Fairport Convention from the 1969 album Liege and Lief, possibly my all-time favourite. Here's the lovely Sandy Denny singing it ...

Crazy Man Michael, he wanders and walks
And talks to the night and the day-oh
But his eyes they are sane and his speech it is clear
And he longs to be far away-oh

Yep, that sounds like me allright

As you may have guessed I'm a bit of an old hippy

That song was pretty cool. (just chocked full of hidden agression)

"favourite"..its no doubt the English spelling.

Your post was pretty good, though not much contrversy, except for the protest tune.

Was that you way of expressing anti-war sentiment?

The passive resistance pours from the page.

Overall I like it.

Welcome. For what my "welcome" is worth.

Thanks for the welcome psyko45, I appreciate it.

Ah, yes 'favourite' is the "English english" spelling. btw the "English english" term is an just my attempt to add humour and colour, but I don't want to labour the point!

Actually I find it's a great way of spotting where someone hails from on forums, although Canadians can catch me out.

Interesting thought on the song, Ive always seen it as a melancholy story about magic and insanity - "a song steeped in the imagery of roses growing from the breasts of dead lovers" according to one site.

But yes I can see the hidden agression. Richard Thompson wrote it following the devastating van crash in which the band's drummer Martin Lamble (19) and Richard's girlfriend Jeannie Franklyn (20) were killed when they were all returning home from a gig. So terribly sad.

Talking to Flypaper's Frank Kornelussen in 1984, Thompson admitted the song was about Jeannie really. "CMM is kind of guilt, because in some way I feel responsible for her dying. There wasn't any way I was, but I just felt that at the time." (Extract from RT Biography)

Now for proper Right-On anti-war protest songs I don't think you can beat -

Barry McGuire's 'Eve Of Destruction' from 1965

And Strawbs 'New World' from 1972

Hope you like 'em

Why thank you queenannie
I looked at your profile and I see we do have quite a few interests in common. Looking at your MP3 thread I see some of my favourites there too. And your comments section has inspired me to start one also (I wasn't sure what it was for).

In peace and friendship.
