Yes, I remember this technology from the late 80's. There was some opposition to the patent as I recall. Congress was debating whether or not a life form could be patented and sold for commercial purposes.
If they were only that concerned about human life, I believe things would be a lot better.

Well, they have been using these microbes for the last 20 years.

I doubt if they will be used here. These microbes convert the oil to harmless byproducts. BP would not be able to recoop their oil.
