Ok, while I was supposed to be working I had the inclination to do a little searching on Google. Well I decided to look up volcanoes and I wish I had not. I can honestly say that volcanoes were something that I only read about in National geographic. Usually some poor sap climbing up the thing only to have his foot and arm blown off by a flying ball of hot lava. So imagine my surprise when being used to hearing about a volcanic eruption once or twice a year, I find that we have 11 volcanic eruptions in the last 6 months, and don't forget that Katla is also expected to blow anytime.

The Mayans said this would happen. Obama said "we are fighting for the survival of the human race" with no reference to anything. I think that it is possible the recent C.M.E has something to do with the latest Central American eruptions. I also think it is not the last we will see. Yellowstone, katla and a bunch of other European volcanoes are waking up.

I'm off to the shop for 2190 tins of pork and beans (the wife hates pork and beans - 3 years of her complaining about the food is probably not wise)

I dont think that the level of eruptions is that odd on the grand scale of things, maybe just seems that way to someone researching it for the first time.

There has been many active volcanoes in our recent history.

Just seems odd now with all the other disasters going on.

Well,there is not to much to worry about I believe.

Your source is somebody's blog not a real news organization.

There are and have been active volcanoes releasing energy for all of mankind.

The Aleutian island chain is nothing more than a series of volcanoes.There is it seems one of them smoking or belching at any moment.

I do not see anything to indicate that they are more active.

Our modern information over load just makes it seem that way because we can access the data easier.

When we start seeing the creation of volcanoes where there has been none I would start to be concerned.

I do not think it is over average actually.

We do not even have a data set to work with really.

100-200 years of decent records with several ancient major eruptions listed, is only scratching the surface, the tip of the iceberg if you will.

Before the 1950s we had no records of most Underwater volcanic eruptions. This is a totally new data set we are only now creating.

Essentially, the point is that in past ages, there could have been an average of several dozen major eruptions per year, and we would have had little to no information about it.

My stance is this : We do not have enough data information to make reasonable conclusions or deductions about the periodicity or frequency of volcanic eruptions over vast geological periods of time.

Within a hundred years for example, our understanding of geosciences will be far advanced from the mere primitive delusions we have about geology today. There will be so much more data to study and learn from then.

So before we jump to conclusions, lets build a massive data set first and then study it. Sorry that this will take a few hundred years.

We're are living in very interesting times thats for sure.

As far as the volcanoes are concerned.. I do think something is up. This is the most active year for volcanoes in the longest time.

Usually I live within 30km of a dormant Volcanoe, it is scary to think it could erupt whilst Iam asleep(for mr anyway but these things are coming to a head?
Its Earths way of balancing out the threat we pose?

Well there are 35 volcanoes active and erupting right now, if I interpret the information correctly on the following site, RSOE EDIS scroll down and you'll see the list of active volcanoes. Quite many, all over the world. I guess a common thing.

The chances are just as good that there could be a "massive volcano (no "e") activating" in 2012 as there is in 2011, 2013, or 2525.

Doesn't sound out of the normal to me.

Every year about 60 volcanoes erupt, but most of the activity is pretty weak...www.ussartf.org...

It would really be a worry if it was the last volcanic activty we see. Volcanoes have, and always will be, a fact of this dynamic rock we call Earth.

Without volcanoes, this world would be a vastly different place. There would be no Hawaii or Aleutian islands, and here in NZ we probably wouldn't have a North Island. In New Zealand alone we have a lot of regularly active volcanoes and dormant volcanoes waiting to vent again.

That doesn't mean the end of the world is coming though, and I'm yet to see where the mayans said this. The only link to the Mayan calender end date and volcanoes I've seen is in the (horrible) movie 2012, and a few random speculating posts that provide no evidence.

Of course, we could see a catastrophic eruption at any time. I personally don't want to be around if Taupo decides to go off. I grew up in the area and it's a beutiful place, but it has been the cause of the largest eruptions in both the last 75,000 years (VEI of 8!), and the last 5,000 years. Katla's a minor burp compared to these.

You should always be prepared for emergencies, but there is no reason to believe there is anything particularly abnormal at the moment. Just Earth doing it's thing, as it always has.
