...I think the general idea is to collapse the hole on itself thereby plugging it. Using a shaped charge of explosive would be the idea. As someone has already said, we can't account for the margin of error. It could collapse and and open up an even bigger hole.

If it is leaking 20,000 to 50,000 barrels per day, then it could leak for several centuries! Not that any human or fish would be left around to witness it!

Is it possible that this is an extinction level event? Doomsday. A precursor to 2012? Obama doesn't strike me as a Doomsday player. I don't think he packs the gear.
