Baby Super Powers.

Hello ATS, this is my first thread so give me some slack
...
This morning, just after I'd finished my hair and was waiting on my sister so we could go to school, I seen something interesting on the Today show on WIN at around 8:30am.
Link.
According to Anthropologist Dr Stephen Juan, babies have as he describes, "Superpowers," including Telepathy.

Telepathy:

Babies have an amazing ability to read moods and can sense the tension in the environment which surrounds them, especially that of their caregiver.

Eyesight:

The belief used to be that babies were blind and can't see anything until their six months of age. Now we know they can see quite well but only to about 25cm, the distance between them and their mother when breastfeeding.

The mind and learning:

Using all their senses, the baby is continually perceiving and learning about the world they have come into and they don't have the filtering system we have as adults. Adults block out 98 percent of what we see and hear but a baby blocks out very little. A newborn's brain is like a sponge, it takes everything. The brain has a prime time to learn things that's why it's harder to learn a language after the age of 11 or an instrument at a middle age.

Touch:

Through the belly, a fetus in the last trimester can tell the touch of their father compared to the touch of any other man, even if the father is silent. So we know it's not hearing, it's touch.

Smell:

The newborn's sense of smell is very strong, it's the newborn's strongest sense of all the senses. A newborn can tell the difference between their mother's milk and another breastfeeding mother's milk. They can also tell their own mother's body smell. Hearing We have underestimated newborn hearing in the past, but they can hear well. They can recognise the sound of their father's voice before they are born. They can tell the difference between their mother's voice and other women.

I find the telepathy and the hearing aspect interesting, what do you all think ?

NOTE: (A video is available in the link.)

Heya,

Congrats on your first thread. I don't have any kids.. and have never really studied their abilities.. so I will have to look into this. Interesting, but I wish there was a little more detail as to how he came to his conclusions.

S&F for your first thread. Nice start.

Interesting, especially the "telepathy" bit.
I often wonder if there is something to the idea of a spirit / soul, whatever you want to call it and rebirth / reincarnation. Through the years, many of the strange reincarnation stories I have read of have been from very young children, with the ability to describe events / places / people who they have never come into contact with. Maybe a passing of a soul and it's memories to another body, with the memories fading as the new baby develops?

I had a very strange but wonderful experience with a friends baby daughter a few years ago, when she was about 5 or 6 months old.
She was on my lap and started to try and pull herself up with an amazing look of steely determination on her face. I picked her up so she was standing on my lap and she reached out with both hands and clasped my head in a surprisingly strong grip, then moved her face to within a few inches of mine and stared straight into my eyes. A very strange feeling just washed over me, extreme calm and like nothing else existed, no sound, nothing, just the two of us. After what felt like an eternity, but was in fact just a few brief seconds, she pulled back with such a lovely smile and returned to sitting on my lap.
I don't know what happened but it was beautiful and changed me and I'll never forget it. The only way I can think of describing it was that she looked into my mind (soul?) and liked what she saw. We connected that day and she is still my special little friend - I'm godfather, entertainer, teacher and honourary uncle all rolled into one

I know, none of what I described is scientifically measurable or able to be replicated in a lab - but it happened just as I described.

What a great thread, Jesse! S & F.

I have always believed that babies know more than we credit.

When that new baby smiles at you, everyone says it is not a true smile, but actually it is.

I think babies come here knowing so much, and sadly adults deny it, block it, and remove it from the baby's brain.

Maybe babies are from other planets?

Anyway, they know a lot more than adults do, and so do 2 year olds.

After about the age of 3, we are all brainwashed and we lose that magical thing, unfortunately.

I wonder why.

It is almost as if the powers that be in this world try and ruin it for their own ends.

Harvard would agree, totally and completely. Though Harvard , would have it's own , different words. They would be , correct, politically, harvardly

First, let me say that Dr. Stephen Juan is way behind and far off.
Secondly, I seriously hope most parents in America thought this was a joke.

Here's why :

Any human not able to determine moods and tension, especially with as expressive as people are these days, is below average at best.

Seeing as how babies are incredibly selfish, it would take a much more selfish human being not to be able to discern moods and tension.

As well, a baby relies mostly on emotion because logic and reason are beyond the general scope of their thinking... so, yes, babies can and will relate to emotion.

Eyesight:

The belief used to be that babies were blind and can't see anything until their six months of age. Now we know they can see quite well but only to about 25cm, the distance between them and their mother when breastfeeding.

Apparently most parents don't spend a lot of time paying attention to details.

The belief about babies being blind was utterly foolish and the belief that they only see well up to 25cm is equally as foolish.

My son Link is 5 months old right now. At TWO WEEKS OLD he would smile at me a whole room away when I smiled at him.

He would cry when I made a mean face - a whole room away.

Adults choose to block things out........ which is why they believe the rest of the junk in these studies! Some of us actually pay attention to detail, though. Just because most people have a harder time learning a language or playing an instrument later in life, it does not mean that they do not have the same capabilities. The truth is that people tend to be more self-serving and self-loathing and self-justifying. Therefore, people will come up with any number of excuses to fit their particular circumstance.

Yes, babies are more of a clean slate. This is common sense. However, do we forget that babies carry the genetic information of the parents? Those same genes, formed from sex cells which are constantly being reproduced in the human body, contain all the information of our entire being up to the moment they are produced.

Who is inside the brain of a baby?

Touch:

Through the belly, a fetus in the last trimester can tell the touch of their father compared to the touch of any other man, even if the father is silent. So we know it's not hearing, it's touch.

I guess we're all super-humans. I can sense who is home in my apartment building, if they have friends, if they are the ones home, and if they're happy or mad - and the walls aren't THAT thin.

Smell:

The newborn's sense of smell is very strong, it's the newborn's strongest sense of all the senses. A newborn can tell the difference between their mother's milk and another breastfeeding mother's milk. They can also tell their own mother's body smell.

How is this superhuman? Who here can taste the difference between different brands of milk? Who here has flashbacks at the mere wiff of a familiar aroma?

Hearing We have underestimated newborn hearing in the past, but they can hear well. They can recognise the sound of their father's voice before they are born. They can tell the difference between their mother's voice and other women.

Once again, I ask, How is this "super-human"?

I find the telepathy and the hearing aspect interesting, what do you all think ?

I think that I'm glad a young person is interested in learning. I think I'm frustrated that you're being fed lousy information from people society considers to be reliable.

Edit to change "ex" tags to ensure that people understand which parts are my opinion.

What a terrific first thread! A most robust welcome to you. It seems that most children are drawn towards comic books and tales of superhero's, and certainly my son was no different. He was not even three years old when he first saw the movie The Incredibles. He loved to run around and occasionally thrust his fist up in the air and shout; "Incedibles!" At the dinner table he would often point to his mother, then me, and finally himself and declare; "Mommy, Daddy, Ian, Incedibles!"

About a year later he watched the move Spartacus for the first time, and then began pumping his fist in the air and declaring; "I am Spartacus!" He was also an avid fan of Spiderman, and this allowed for the opportunity to stress to him that; "With great power, comes great responsibility". Often, when I am being less than powerful, my son reminds that; "Responsibility is power, Daddy." He is my genuine hero, and I can only hope to return the favor. His power is remarkable, his genuine sense of ethics awe inspiring, and his unfailing knowledge that he can accomplish whatever he sets his mind to more than instructive to all who know him. His super powers are unquestionable, and his million dollar smile doesn't hurt either.

Thanks for sharing what you learned, I found it very interesting.

So, Dr Juan is way behind and far off? It is a lie?

Then you are interested in certain aspects of the theory?

Sorry, I don't get your point.

When my first child was born, at that moment she knew everything.

- At least, I was convinced of that as I held her, looking into her eyes, while my body completed its job of pushing her out.
(She was born face up.)

We are pieces of the eternal spirit, only here for a little while.
Sometimes it takes a while before a newborn spirit forgets its connection with the infinite.

Sorry, friend... I mean no harm by asking - Did you read my post in its entirety?

Edit to answer one of your questions more accurately - this doc's information is misleading, yes.

I think he meant that they have normal vision, but it's very very good at short range (ie... 25CM)

My dog can actually see the future and predict natural disasters. Not to mention he's figured out a unified field theory in physics. Sucks that he can't communicate any of that to us or I'm sure he'd tell us all about it.

Technically the ability to sense moods and tension is not telepathy it's empathy. So babies are empaths not telepaths. Telepathy is the ability to read and understand the thougts of others, not the emotions. A little misnomer, nothing major but hardly superpowers.

Is that what he meant?

You're still a kid. You're supposed to still be good at paying attention to detail, friend.

Atleast, according to Dr. Stephen Juan-make-jokes-on-national-television.

Nonetheless, welcome to ATS.

The hearing thing really isn't all that shocking. Would you really expect a fetus with working ears to be unable to hear anything through the mother's belly? It can probably tell its father's voice because that is one of its most familiar voices; it heard it all the time in the womb. An experiment that could be done to test this would be to see if a baby recognizes the voice of a father that ran off right after conception.
