Of course us commoners from all over the country have been treat poorly by TPTB over the years.

Unfortunately, The South and Southeners get generalised together as we Northerners do despite the vast diversity between us.

Southerners tend to get portrayed as the stereotypical arrogant, brash, pompous Cockney or afflunet toff.

I have a lot of respect for your posts, are you sure you want to state that the North was treated much worse than my home County of Sussex by the Norman and like?

Well, on the basis of how much was actually laid to waste, I'd say yes. On the basis of what it laid the guidelines for - the North-South divide that exists to this day, then I'd also say yes.

I actually feel like I was reaching out a hand in friendship, and stated that I felt sad a north/south Divide exists... maybe I was wrong to do that, I have learned my lesson with burnt fingers not to bother in the future.

You're being a bit sensitive here. There was no dig at you personally, anything but. We're interested in similar periods of history; I tend to think of you as being 'on my wavelength'. Again, not a dig at you at all. I was merely pointing out that whilst the North-South divide might "bug" you, the way the North has been treated over the last 1000 years and the South, particularly that there London and the South East, has been favoured economically, culturally and politcally over the North, then it's a bit more than being "bugged".
Again, it's not a dig at you, unless you're some Norman speaking immortal that was whispering plans into the ears of the Bastard and Thatcher and every twat in between.

At no point in my post was I defining when a North/South divide started... I still feel it is a construction of the Establishment to keep power over us surfs.. That point of view will go with me to the grave...

Again, you've got me wrong. I wasn't accusing you of (wrongly) claiming when the divide started. I was just pointing out that it's a lot older than many people think - often North-South divide starts with 1970s Thatcherism, which, as any fule kno, isn't the case.

And I've never taken to position that one part of the country was treated better/worse than another.. especially regarding the Normans, who I understood ruled Sussex (direct route to/from Normandy) with pretty much an Iron fist.

Well, on that point we'll have to disagree. The Harrying of the North was pretty vile. Whilst undoubtedly Sussex, like everywhere, was ruled with a Iron fist, the fact is that any, many places in the North just ceased to exist. Like wise, the way the North was treated from the 1800s onwards through to Thatcher and even the Tory Think Tanks of a couple of years ago that recommended quite literally that governments 'abandon' many northern towns and cities and give them up as bad jobs have all been fantastically vile.

Historically, the North has always fared worse economically, health and practically every other bench mark compared to the South.

But I guess I must be wrong, and that in fact the Normans really went round cuddling all us rich snobby Southerners, no wonder we are so disliked in the North.

I'd have a lie down, thoughtsfull. This bizarre weather and the strange, glowing golden orb in the sky must be wreaking havoc with your mind.

Exactly where is 'The North' and where does it start?

Where the electricity stops and the grim, clinging greyness starts, apparently.

There was a lot of hoo-ing and ha-ing a couple of years ago when this was actually looked at a little more scientifically than in previous analysis. The divide is actually a rough diagonal line that runs from the Bristol area up to Grimsby and runs fairly parallel to the English-Scots border.

Bristol?
Never!
They belong to those dastardly Southerners surely.

In my mind I think of anywhere from Lancashire, Yorkshire upwards is 'The North'.

The Midlands are self explanatory and the rest is 'The South'

Yes, it's surprising. However, the dividing line is line in the sand (soil?) as to where money, health, jobs, culture and so on are divided. There are some exceptions though. Parts of Cheshire, for example, are pretty well-off and have good health, whilst I'm sure some areas in and around London are # holes despite having all that London has to offer on their doorsteps.

Was on a sarcastic mission.... couldn't help myself.. I would blame the weather.. but that would be a cop out.. and I should never respond while having a tete a tete with my better half as I just end up making myself look a bell end.. which if I must say I did a very good job of.

Although the physical landscape was not as devastated.. what is really apparent (to how I view history) is the practice of domination/torture/rape etc that was perfected in the conquest of these isles started in Sussex.. it is actually quite a deep scar in this neck of the woods..

The loss at Hastings, cost us a lot, perhaps that is why we cling to things English so stubbornly.. My family still abide by Borough Laws... So it is no wonder that Kipling wrote poems about grumpy Saxons in my neck of the woods..

The type of domination/control methods that where employed are equally insidious as the devastation caused to the land.. so I stand on that point, as it laid the foundation of all the horrors that where inflicted in the name of some royal twat who wanted to nick your land, rape your wife, claim to be your king etc. So I can not see it as worse, just different... and on equal par..

Anyway, what I was trying to get at in my post was the industrial North/agricultural South have been kept divided by a social construct that when it boiled down to the nitty gritty.. the North and South chose the exact same route of protesting when the Establishment drove them to starvation and poverty, even to picking a fake leader.. and I imagine if it was not for the North/South divide we would live in a much different nation.

Take my home town, a South coast port, with very few migrants, they look around see we have sweet FA and pee off up North thinking you lot have more to offer.. when you don't.. the destruction of these isles and the industry we have has been quite complete.

Not irreversible.... but not far off..

Any way need to go do some other fence mending
