Anyone watch this?

At first, I thought it was going to be a wanna be Twilight clone (I hate the idea of "sparkling" vampires...unless they sparkle up in flames)...

My wife started watching it, so naturally, I did too.

It's actually not bad...and mainly because of one character...."Damon"....

This guy is pretty much EXACTLY how I'd be if I were a vampire (and much better looking, lol)....

As Boone on Lost, he was a joke, but he definitely found the right role on this show...(basically, the evil brother to the show's hero....a whiny vampire I call Stephan Squirrelsucker...) I hate these "I don't wanna be a vampire" heroes....

It's actually got a decent ongoing storyline too...and some good characters in it...

It's kind of funny how all these shows (and books) are so similar....

Here are the ingredients: (Twilight, Vampire Diaries, True Blood, etc.)

1. Revolves around a girl that has some kind of unique attracting feature, to vamps.
2. A goody two-shoes vamp, and other, not-so-good vamps.
3. Torn between two main lovers
4. Backdrop of a supernatural world existing along with our own.
5. Some other, dark force, working behind the scenes on a bigger goal.

For me, (and my wife, although for different reasons) Damon makes the show. It's refreshing to see a vampire who is comfortable with what he is, vs. the whiny, boo hoo, I'm a vampire tools...(like Stephan Squirrell-sucker)...(my name for him).

It's actually got a decently evolving backstory too.

Along the same lines as the numerous current books and movies, my bet is that there will soon be weres on the scene competing for turf. Those yellow eyes were a huge flag to me. Those immortal amulets (rings) are convenient too.

I wonder if they will follow Laurel Hamilton's books where vamps came forward and gained citizenship among the living. Maybe they will create a synthetic blood (trueblood) like the HBO series and that will allow them to come out to the public. I like the parallels they try to draw with racism issues and the prejudices against acceptance.
In all these stories, there is also a council that governs them all. Perhaps we will see that too.

The show is based on a book series, and with the last episode, the werewolf explanation for the mayor's family seems a certainty.

I'd have to ask my wife if it's that way in the books, as she's actually read them.

Ya know, I do recall seeing a book version, but never read it.
I started watching true blood when it first aired, but then I started reading the books and they were much better albeit very different. After reading the series, I just lost interest in the program, so now if I like the show I hold off reading the books.

The Sookie books were pretty decent, I read the whole series myself...(haven't and don't really plan the same for Vampire Diaries).

While the show is different than the books, I like the directions they take with it (True Blood)...

I find it interesting to watch the evolution of the myths. We are seeing new ideas behind the creatures that will some day become common knowledge and probably become part of their historical fact.

Gaz, what is your take on SuperNatural? I have become a Sam and Dean junkie. If you watch it at all, you could appreciate the complex storylines that have spanned over the seasons. I watched the last season online and was happily surprised to see that the series was opting for another season.

Yup, watch it with my kids every week.

True Blood however is the best vampire series out there are the moment.

Also another not too crapy one would be The Gates. They just wrapped up the first season and it wasn't horrible..

I watched the first season, and enjoyed the show, but I think there was some kind of time-slot move, and it was on when something else was (and prior to having enough DVR coverage, or time, to watch it). I do plan on picking up the DVD collection though, and watching on a sick day or something. That's pretty much what my wife and I do whenever we get sick through the year....
Better than just being miserable. We watched all of Torchwood that way.

Three episodes into season two now and I have to say, i'm still very much hooked and left wanting more! it's a great show and not exactly the way you'd expect it to be given the audience it's aimed at!

Bring on those Wolves!

As for Supernatural, well that is just one hell of a show! and funnily enough i'm just now about to sit down to watch the first episode of season six!

I just watched season 6 episode 1 of Supernatural and all I can say is wow!
I think I will start a thread about it so I stop hijacking this one.

Well , actually The Vampire Diaries was written back in 1991 by L.J Smith .
So I would not ever include it in the subset of Twilight .
Anyway , It is way better than Twilight .
You must read the original series . i found it more interesting than the TV series !

I have to ask this question.
Do you prefer nina dobrev as Elena or as Kathrine.

After seeing herplay both parts i much prefer her as kathrine, i think she is much better, playing kathrine then elena.
