Gargoyle-like creature - "The UGLY ONE"


BIG TROUT LAKE, Ont. — A strange and ugly creature has washed ashore in a northern Ontario First Nations community and it is being treated as a bad omen.

The creature, which is over 20 centimetres long and has a bare, gargoyle-like face and furry body, was found in a lake on the Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug reserve, some 200 kilometres south of Hudson Bay, earlier this month by hikers.

A dog was sniffing around in the water and the hikers noticed the creature face-down in the lake. The dog then dragged the creature onto the land.

The community's website, which also tells stories of mermaid sightings and a "huge water snake," offers a caution over the strange, unidentified animal.

"No one knows what it is, but our ancestors used to call it the Ugly One," the Kitchenuhmaykoosib website says. "Rarely seen, but when seen, it's a bad omen. Something bad will happen, according to our ancestors."

i am 100% positive this in an otter, bloated and deformed by the water

I did a search for gargoyle like creature and didnt find anything... and this is all new to me.

It's an otter that has begun to decompose due to being in the water.

It was pulled from a fresh water lake, I believe it is a river otter.

yep otter the question is why is its fer going off its face area?

i would be more conserend about why it died then if it was from outer space

I liked the welcome back otter quip, Mr. Mask - But - I must admit, the title for the thread op, is highly original. While I suspected it was 'the otter', the gargoyle drew me in anyhow.

Man, that is one evil looking otter. Yikes!
And they look so cute floating on their backs eating fish.

I'm betting it's a fisher.

I vote for otter. From the feet, to the tail, to the teeth it looks like an otter.
