VADER Is Latest Weapon in Fight Against Roadside Bombs

Source

As attacks by roadside bombs increase in Afghanistan, the U.S. military is rushing protective new technology to the war zone.

Along with more blast-resistant vehicles and more bomb specialists, the Army is preparing to send a newly developed man-hunting radar designed to spot people on the ground, especially those planting deadly improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

The radar - called VADER, for Vehicle and Dismount Exploitation Radar - is sharp-eyed enough to see individuals from an altitude of about 25,000 feet.

However the part I want to comment on:

Northrop won't reveal much about how VADER works - details are being closely held by the Defense Department, Reise said.

Well when do they ever? Very curious piece of technology. When the war is finally over, imagine what this technology will do state side. This thing can monitor an area for up to 36 hours. Come to think of it, those drones that are allegedly supposed to be flying over the border in Mexico, this would be an ideal attachment to those drones IMO.

Cool....then after VADER there will be SKYWALKER.
And before we know it there will be GREEDO and HANSOLO.

I mean, did it absolutely have to be named VADER?

The U.S. army likes to name its stuff after bad guys and scary things. Why can't we go back to the good old days when we'd build a single missile that can blow up 10 cities and name it the "Peacekeeper?"
