First of all: probably nothing.

However, since I can't see Eyjafjallajokull through the clouds tonight and we've analyzed Yellowstone to death, let's talk about Mt Hood!

Anyway, looks like there was a 2.0 in the vicinity today.

Magnitude
2.0
Date-Time

Time of Earthquake in other Time Zones
Location
45.359°N, 121.739°W
Depth
10.7 km (6.6 miles) set by location program
Region
MOUNT HOOD AREA, OREGON
Distances
19 km (12 miles) E (88°) from Mount Hood Village, OR

Add this to a number of quakes taking place in April and May, many centered close to the volcano's summit:

www.geophys.washington.edu...

(scroll down to the map) As you can see, on the time/depth chart there's nothing out of the ordinary, but the recent quakes all seem to clustered near the center of the volcano, or on the left flank.

Today's earthquake hasn't yet been added to the Mt. Hood page, it will be interesting to see where it is on the detailed map.

This doesn't necessarily mean anything, in 2002 there was a pretty dense swarm of earthquakes in the area and nothing of note happened. However, given its proximity to Portland, Mt. Hood is one to keep an eye on.

Following today's quake, there have been a lot of little cracks and pops.

Considering the view I would have of this show I don't even want to think of it

If hood was to become active again I'm pretty sure I will be cutting my losses and gtfo out dodge.

If Mt Hood is 'God's Country'...

[atsimg]http://files.abovetopsecret.com/images/member/0f5fc6c3a95d.jpg[/atsimg]

Then Mt Etna must be God's 'Vacation spot'...

I grew up around Hood, Mt Rainier and Mt Saint Hellens.
Now, live near Etna...
I dunno what it is about volcanoes that intrigue me so beyond it's hard to imagine something so beautiful can be so deadly.
I really hope Mt. Hood calms down... Such incredible beautiful country there. (And the fishing!) lol

Thanks for bringing this info to the threads.
Keep us informed - and keep safe!

peace

It's all good - every now and again he grumbles - maybe it has to do with Spring Fever.

You have my attention!

I can't get any webicorder plots from the UW network for Mt Hood. Strange. HOOD HOOD.UW..BHZ.2010.132 - this seems to have been down fir days, TDH TDH.UW..EHZ.2010.132 nothing for today but there is data for yesterday TDH.UW..EHZ.2010.131 but it stops just before 23:30 UTC and Flag Point VFP.UW..EHZ.2010.131 has the same. Stops yesterday and nothing for today.

So what is this at 17:37? (No idea which recorder this is)

I see nothing other than a 1.7 in Cali - I doubt it is that.

Glad you brought it up. I have been watching our string of volcanos a little closer this past week or so. Things have been...unsettled. Not just at Hood...but those two quakes are a little out of the norm!

OHHHHH....I just went and checked the latest seismo...that is some SCARY looking stuff just starting at about 1735 UTC

HERE

I sure as h@ll hope that isn't really coming from the volcano!!!

Okay....it wasn't just local 'noise'. It shows up on the Helens seismo also:

HERE

Edit to add:

Weird. The Mt. Hood is updated with three more quakes today, but still not showing the two bigger ones. Here is a link to the map...looks to me as if there is a clear 'trail' leading up to the mountain, and then some whithin the crater itself...definately disturbing!

Link

Another edit to add: Ha! If you click on the other link in the one I just supplied, it takes you to a more complete, kinda scary list of more quakes. It still doesn't show the two bigger ones. Here is that list:

No doubt!!!

I'm about an hour and a half, maybe less at the speeds I drive, east of Mt. Hood... No thank you!! St. Helens was bad enough...and that went well north of me...Mt. Hood would go right through here.

Yikes, what is that? Anyone check USGS yet?
I'm not making a prediction, but the oddest thing happened to me this morning when I was doing a cat scan. All the sudden the thought of a huge EQ came to my mind, and I kid you not, it brought me to tears. Weird.

Is it just me or are most of those very shallow in depth? If so, that's not good right?

Both of those quakes are now off the USGS site. If you take a look at the longer, extended list I posted you can see that they are on that one, but downgraed to a 1.6 and the 11th and then on the 12th a double quake of 1.9 and 0.9.

Quite a change in magnetude, especially for small ones. Whatever. It is still a trend that warrants some attention at least. Like the OP said, no need to panic but to be aware.

Especially in light of all the activity lately. Another volcano in Guatamala just errupted.
