Suspicious Truck Closes RFK Bridge

NEW YORK (AP) ― New York City police are investigating a truck abandoned several yards from a toll booth near the Manhattan side of the RFK/Triborough Bridge.

Police say witnesses reported seeing a man flee the vehicle sometime Wednesday night and a smell of gasoline was reported coming from the vehicle, which was described as a U-Haul or Ryder truck.

Traffic on the bridge was closed in both directions and emergency services officers along with the bomb Squad and the FDNY are responding to the scene.

No other information was immediately available.

The Triborough Bridge was recently renamed the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge.

Toll booth operator said a man abandon the U haul, and upon approaching it smelled strong smells of gasoline.

They say the tollbooth operator witnessed it all. He claims the driver ran away, but did not say anything to any of the toll booth operators. Seems strange to me because if it were some engine problem, or a gas leak, then the person would probably go to the toll booth operators to ask for help, or at least call the police.

Bomb squad is heading to the scene to investigate.

This could just be a simple gas leak, but moving vans have been used in past terror attacks, and after the recent Times Square failure, NYPD is not taking any chances.

New York City's Triborough Bridge was shut down on Wednesday night after police said a truck, smelling of gas, was found abandoned on the busy thoroughfare.

New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said a worker on the bridge that connects the New York City boroughs of Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx found the vehicle abandoned by its driver and apparently smelling of gas.

Bomb squad has reported that they have finished x-raying the U Haul, and that they have cut open the truck. They have concluded that it is not a bomb, and is now considered a hazmat situation. The Bridge is expected to reopen shortly after midnight EST.

Weird. What is going on in New York? False flag? Or just some idiots having a little too much fun?

Not sure, question now is going to be what happened to the driver, and why did he/she flee the scene rather than stay nearby and talk to the police.

Could this be a false flag op to get the police/Bomb squad/NYPD/NYFD all paying attention to this while they setup a real threat somewhere else?

Only time will tell.

He probably got picked up by his wife in their car, er something.

Sounds like the truck had a fuel pump issue, and the guy parked it and took a walk to call a tow or something.

He's probably sitting somewhere watching the news and quietly crapping his pants, contemplating the amount of trouble he's going to be in....

Yea h really, poor man. People are just freaking out these days. A can of hairspray blows up in a suitcase? Terror! Someone farts on the subway? Terror.

People need to calm down and take a breather.

Something very well could have been wrong with the truck and he just freaked out thinking it was gonna blow up and ran away.

Yeah, I could definitely see that. I have actually had a moving van dump all its fuel while we were loading it once. Right in our driveway.

The guy probably was on the phone with Uhaul or Ryder and saw the Calvary rush the bridge and shut it down. Oh man, what do you do in that situation?

heh, a simple "My Bad?" may not suffice.

U-haul or Ryder truck. How about contacting U-haul or Ryder to see if A. Their dispatch has been made aware of the truck suffering from mechanical malfunction or B. Perhaps they could assist in contacting the person who rented the vehicle which may be suffering from mechanical failure. Or you could of course just cordon off the area, shut down traffic and freak everybody out.

If there is anything to this other than a complete lack of common sense the quickest way to get a cop to go to somewhere other than where you are at is 911 hangup or set a dumpster on fire. Again if there were anything to this it was nothing more than a diversion but that is a stretch.

Hey Antonia - have you ever been on the subway when the 300lb man 3 seats up farts? It can be quite a terrifying experience.

The closure came days after a failed bomb attack on New York's Times Square that has heightened security concerns in America's most populous city.

Maybe the driver had some kind of suspension on his lisence and didn't wanna spend the night in jail....I'm in NYC and for a suspended lisence they book you overnight...sometimes it takes 30-40 hours to go threw the system....only logical reason I could see him leaving the truck without telling a toll booth or police officer....other then that the have roadside help that will tow you off the bridge for free....the don't allow tow trucks to pick up cars on bridges and only certain tow truck companies can tow you off a highway...they regulate that pretty hard here...
