I believe that these finds were announced in 2008 but I just saw it, check ATS and didn't find it. I think these things are amazing-both in design and function. It is things like this that make me believe there is life on other planets-even as tiny as these things. We don't know what we'll find-we are still finding new things on Earth everyday-it seems. If these were posted before, my sorries. If you haven't seen then or heard about them-Enjoy. (Note: there are a few more at the sites noted in the Sources section).

In this photo released by the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Census of Marine Life, is shown a sand-flea hyperoche capucinus, a common predator swimming in polar waters

In this photo is shown a chionodraco hamatus, one of the Antarctic’s ice fish, which can withstand temperatures that freeze the blood of all other types of fish

In this photo is shown a nemertean pelagonemertes rollestoni hunting for zooplankton prey that it will harpoon with a dart attached to the tongue coiled within it. Its yellow stomach reaches out to feed all parts of the body

In this photo is shown a shell-less pteropod or swimming snail, clione limacina, found in both Arctic and Antarctic waters, which preys exclusively on its fellow shelled pteropods

In this photo is shown a bean-sized swimming snail, limacina helicina, occurring in both Arctic and Antarctic waters. It spins a mucus-net off its paddle-like foot-wings to trap algae and other small particles on which it feeds

This is amazing that such creatures exist and are still being discovered in our oceans. Its a travesty to think of how many unknown creatures we will never know about that were just wiped out by BP.

Awesome photos.

The middle looks like a fern and the bottom two look like flowers.

Do you suppose we could enjoy a thread admiring oceanic wildlife finds without the conjecture based on your eco-political petulance?

Yes, let's please try to keep BP and any other oil company out of this. Next thing you know someone will say these creatures in the photos are mutations from the Exxon Valdese Oil mess.

Great little beasts!
Those critters remind me of when we looked at a drop of pond water when I was a tiny kid at school.

It actually freaked me out to see what looked like another world, full of lots of different alien looking beasts.

It freaked me out more when I found my house was fed water from a natural spring, and that I had probably been drinking trillions of the little dudes for years!
Off Topic:
I can't wait until NASA/Bill Stone get their DepthX missions to Europa and IO underway-I bet there will be similar critters under the ice on those moons.

And then there's DepthX, an audacious NASA-funded project formally known as the Deep Phreatic Thermal Explorer. It's a robot that will map an ocean 6 miles beneath the frozen surface of Jupiter's moon Europa and sniff out microbiological life. A team of researchers - roboticists, astrobiologists, and electromechanical engineers - from six universities are working on the project. But it's Stone's baby.

It may launch in 2019 they reckon.

We may see similar critters to the ones in your OP,on a far off moon within our lifetimes!
Hope so

I know what you are saying about the pond. I has a similar experience. Tramatized me (frogs-big and agressive-it seemed-lol).

Yes, I was thining about these critters and then the fossile from Mars that they claim showed life there.

The more I see of the world, now that my eyes have been opened up, I see that there is a far better chance that we will find life out in Space but it will be more like these type of things (and plants etc) and not actual being like human or humaniod.

Maybe we are the most advanced (sad to think about) or more advance than some etc. I sure hope before I die I know the answer(s).
