Anyway, when I call an American business, why in the blue heck am I asked to press "1" for English? That practice should be banned and the official language of the United States of America should be English.

It should be banned??? So you are suggesting that the government should be able to tell American companies who they can market to??? And you think they should ban companies the freedom to be able to sell to anyone they want???

If you have a problem with this...complain to the companies or boycot them. The companies do this to expand their customer base, to increase their profits. If it bothers you that much...don't give them your business...but put the blame on them...don't blame people who can't speak English.

FFS people...how low brow can ATS get over a period of a week over a damn immigration bill? If ATS is supposed to be a more intelligent or more enlightened group...then I have little hope for humanity.

you obviously didn't read my entire post, the point of this thread was to explain my idea why there is so much segregation between countries, which like I said before could have been avoided a long time ago if it wasn't for OUR government

As an immigrant I believe I can comment from experience in a balanced manner.
When you emigrate , you undertake the most momentous task.
For some namely the wealthy it is easy, they can flit between their Mother land and their new home at will, but for many its a one way ticket.
The upheavel to ones physical ,mental , and spiritual life is huge.
You have in a lot of cases ...left everything behind that contains a piece of your heart and soul.
It can be espescially trumatic for the relatively young and old.
The stress placed on the family head or heads is tremendous.
Who can blame any migrant for herding with those of their own kind , those who understand through similar experiences and reactions?
They do not see themselves as immigrants, can you who has never settled ina new country or state or neighbourhood understand this?
They see themselves a shuman beings who are trying to survive in a life that in many instances is difficult.
The question of language is a difficult one?
But the Mexicans at least share our basic beliefs ie Christianity.
No American wants to see their land become a latin colony....but no mexican by choice would wish to forever forget their roots and adopt alien outlooks in their adopted homeland.
There has to be a recognition that millions of Latinos live in the USA and they arent going to go away, and the Latinos need to recognise the traditional Americans aen't going to go away either.
The common enemy of both is crime and drugs ...that is what can unite and see a peaceful and beautiful future for the entire USA, not spiteful race wars based ON minority ACTIONS ON BOTH SIDES.

I am sure it is really difficult, but then the question comes to my mind, if it is sooo easy to get american citizenship, then why are so many people jumping the border to come over here??

They have no respect for the U.S.A, or its citizens if they are jumping fences to come to your country. Why don’t they take an English course in their country (and don’t say there are not any English courses, my half brother is an English teacher in Mexico, there are TONS of places you can go, and they are not that expensive either). So before you should blame it on your own government it is not their duty to teach immigrants English, it should be the immigrants own responsibility to learn it.

I know it’s too the point where they want to see your papers in order to stay in this country, but is it really a bad thing?? I for one believe we should be what our four fathers wanted, a melting pot, but because we have been segregated by the country we live in for so long, places like Mexico for example have not had the opportunities that we have had and now have regressed socially, and mentally in lots of ways, so when an “illegal alien” comes into our country we get pissed off because they can’t speak English, and obviously they should, but in reality it is the governments fault for segregating everyone for so long, If they would have started letting people come in to our country 50 years ago they wouldn't be the way they are now, no one can freely go where they please anymore and haven’t been able to for very long, so hence this is why Mexico is the way it is, if the people of Mexico have been able to have the same opportunities as us they probably would be able to speak English, have higher overall wages, and been able to grow and learn like everyone else. Because it has gone on for so long, they might be better off staying in Mexico because of the stigma attached; I would like to know your opinions on this theory. So please be nice!!

Hi brooklyn87-

First of all, I would say it is our governments fault that there are so many illegals here.

Second, government and big buisness doesn't want them to speak English, they don't want them to move up in the world so they can stay where they are, making minimum wage and keeping the cost of labor cheap.

Third, if we let everyone in who wanted to come to the US we would no longer be the United States we would be a third world country, and what is happening now with our unemployment would be 10 fold.

fourth, that is what the government wants, a third world country in the United States. The government is run by big buisness and they want cheap labor. They also don't want people to ask questions, ATS is a good example of people asking questions, they want people to follow not be leaders and ask questions.

Fith, if you look at the law that Arizona passed (which is basically trying to inforce the law in the United States that you should not be here illegally) why is the government trying to stop it, becuase it will run out there cheap labor and slow there efforts of making the United States a third world country, where the rich are rich and the poor are poor.

sixth, the government is scared because they see that more people are paying attention to them and are learning that they are nothing but liers stealing more and more money and wealth from the middle class, the government pretents to care about us but they don't they have there own agendas. Its funny though, alot of people still don't understand that both the republicans and democrats are the same thing only using different approaces to get the same end result, lies and trickery to gain more power and money. They just use things like abortion, illegals, health care, pollution, and other things to try and make it to office.

I don't blame the illegals because if I was born in Mexico I would do the same thing, come the United States. I blame our government, they want the illegals here, if not, why would they be trying to stop Arizona from trying to keep the illegals out.

It's much more than just pressing 1 when you call a business. Where I live, you can't get a job unless you speak Spanish. In other words, you can't get a job unless you're Mexican. Even if you want to be a farm laborer, which is considered a bad job, you really need to know Spanish so you can communicate with all the other workers. Only thing one can do is move somewhere where Mexicans aren't in control of everything.

I wonder if they had started form the beginning if english would be around at all, or if Spanish would be around at all

What -- The U.S. didn't allow Mexicans in 50 years ago? That's news to me. I'm pretty sure when my grandfather came from Greece in 1920, Mexicans probably had the same opportunities to come to the U.S. that he did. And the immigrants that followed, too.

...and, by the way, my grandfather learned to speak English rather quickly -- at least quickly enough to hold down a good-paying job working alongside English-speaking people at a concrete plant, and eventually knew enough English to own his own restaurant with a largely English-speaking clientele.

I'm not so radically anti-immigrant that I think Mexicans should know English before they get here, but I also don't think it is the fault of our government that they don't. The immigrants from the early 20th century didn't know English "right off the boat", either, but they took it upon themselves -- and felt it was their duty -- to learn the language of their new country as quickly as possible.

Edit to add:
I was thinking about this last night, and I would like to add that our government could be faulted a little for empowering Spanish-speaking immigrants to not really need to learn English right away. The laws that have been set up that allow Spanish-only-speakers to function in the U.S. without needing to know English is not providing enough incentive for those immigrants to learn the language quickly.

I'll go back to the early 20th-century...If there were laws in the U.S. that made it mandatory to provide government and private services in the Italian, Polish, and Russian languages, I really doubt the Italian, Polish, and Russian immigrants would have felt the need to learn English so quickly.

The government is now empowering Spanish-speakers to NOT learn English.

Mexico has regressed socially? That's an arrogantly ethnocentric statement. And, it's not historically accurate either.

Sure, they should learn to speak English. But you (and I) should learn to speak Spanish as well. There is no reason that each one of us should not be fluent in at least 3 languages.

"That's kind of unique to Spanish people"??? LOL that's just a completely ignorant statement, coming from someone that hasn't been around the world much.

When my great grand parents came over here from Germany, they only spoke German, but learned English over time, and blended right in with everyone else, and the rest of the country didn`t have to learn German. So, why can`t the Mexicans do the same thing? Please, give me a very good reason.

The only reason I would learn 3 other languages, is if I was going to be around those that spoke them, but that is a big if, and doesn`t look like it will happen in this life time. One of my brothers took French in school, but by the time he was 25, he had forgotten most of it, so the only good that came from it was the credit he got for taking it in school.

NEWSFLASH!
If you think Hispanicos can't speak English, have I got a construction job for you.
When they say "no hablo ingles", don't believe it because they are faking it.
Sure their English may be extremely broken but I guarantee you they can understand 75% of what you tell them.

...that's also why you rarely, or ever, see a Hispanic pan handling.
