I will post this in both threads since they were posted simultaneously.

Ouch. 6.9

Here we go again.

I wonder what is really the scope of all of this?

There were no tsunami warnings issued but the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said local tsunamis on coastlines within 100 km (60 miles) of the quake's centre were possible.

I wouldn't say "here we go again" just yet. It's been pretty darned quiet for a couple of weeks now. One more above 6.5 in a 24 hour period and then I'd say it's getting interesting again.

I'm glad this one seems to have struck far from civilization.

Yep, we were due...

Remember peeps, over the course of a year an average of 11 6 - 6.9's can be expected each MONTH.

No I mean "here we go again" as in watch the same old clichés appear in this thread.

You know, HAARP this and Nibiru that.

I think it is safe to say "here we go again" right off the bat.

You misunderstood my humor.

Well, it is a conspiracy site!

Did wonder when the H word would appear, though

It seems to have been downgraded to a 6.5, which is still pretty bad. I hope there wasn't too much damage done to the areas it hit.

Your concern is admirable, and I am not knocking that in any way at all, but please do look at the details of the event first.

Whether this was a 6.9 or a 6.5 is not really an issue, although a 6.9 is 2.51 times bigger than a 6.9 and in released energy terms is 3.98 times stronger. My main point is that despite the depth, which I believe was revised from 10 to 22Km as well, this event took place in a deep trench which is already over 5000m (5Km) below the surface of the ocean.

With the very steep walls of the trench there would be a mitigation of the potential effects. This is why the shake map is showing the intensity as Mercalli scale 4, as opposed to the RSOE calculation of 8 which was computer calculated an took no account of the location.

Please do continue with the concern about events like this, but also learn more about earthquakes and their effects, even if only for your own peace of mind.

Just as an example, when I saw this I was not concerned. Had this been around Mexico City for instance, I would have been extremely concerned as the geology of the area can magnify the effects of a quake as much as 75 times. Another example is the difference in intensity between the Cascades area and East of there. East of the Cascades earthquakes tend to be felt more. (Note we are talking intensity as perceived by humans rather than strength as measured by seismographs)
