Volcano Monitoring in busy flight corridor to End May 1st

Something worth worrying about:

Russia has stopped funding Kamchatka volcano monitoring. On May 1st, "KVERT" will cease operations and will no longer monitor and issue advisories, in one of the most volcanically active regions in the world.

From KVERT's latest update:

Attention!
KVERT does not have an Agreement with Russian Aviation Administration from May 01, 2010.
Probably KVERT will stop the work from May 01, 2010.


Currently, four Kamchatkan volcanoes are either at orange or yellow status, meaning they pose a real threat to aviation.

This, again, shows that the general public and politicians around the world are uninterested in science. We can spend $50 million dollars for a new MIG, but not to fund a vital institution that can help prevent disasters over one of the busiest flight corridors in the world.

well looks like AVo will have to pick up the slack , because thats really a stupid thing to do.

New warning on the KVERT site that operations will be suspended February 5th 2011, due to lack of funding. Things are pretty active on the Kamchatkan peninsula at the moment, with Kizimen looking to pull a Mt St Helens. That would be unfortunate.

1. They do not have any idea about the importance of this place...
2. There is another more important danger to monitor or to spend money on it...
