Georgia confirms highly enriched uranium seizure

The Press Democrat 2010-04-22
In an interview with The Associated Press, President Mikhail Saakashvili declined to divulge details of the seizure but said the uranium was intercepted last month coming into his country in the Caucasus region of southeast Europe. Saakashvili's government no longer controls two breakaway sections of Georgia, separatist Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which declared independence after the 2008....

Fox news said that Georgia is hinting that it is Russia's fault and says they are trying to de-stabalize the area.so if they happened upon this shipment it makes you wonder.

How many others and where else have they all ready gotten thru.and i thought the smuggling of this type of material was only hypothetical.Something is Afoot.its like there letting us know he material is out there so we wont be suprised when 1 goes off somewhere it is all most like they just covered there tracks

I posted this last night in the other thread talking about this, but it takes many pounds of enriched uranium to create a nuclear bomb.

Little boy, for example, used 141 pounds of enriched uranium, and its yield was 14 kilotons with a blast radius of 2 miles.

So, if the amount is in a few ounces, you don't have to worry about a whole city turning into rubble.

I wonder if it was going to be used in another Litvinenko-type murder?

The common attitude towards anything radioactive is one of fear. If even small amounts were found in a city or after an explosion, the terror factor would be heightened. Good catch for the Georgia to find this and stop it.

Litvinenko was hit with Polonium, that gives off alpha radiation I think, it's very hard to detect unless you are specifically looking for it and are right on top of it.

Highly enriched uranium is a different matter, unshielded it's pretty easy to detect, more likely it could be used in a generator or maybe a weapon I would think - it's valuable stuff, could just be a black market deal with no actual plan for it's use yet.

Is there a link for this?

edit Here it is

The head of Georgia's nuclear safety agency, Zaal Lomatadze, told AP Television News in Tbilisi that the "organized group of people tried to smuggle in a small amount of enriched uranium with the purpose of selling it to a would-be buyer."

I knew he was killed with Polonium, but not the distinction between that and this. Thanks

I couldn't read the forbes link for some reason, but was their any mention that this could have been going on for a while-some badass group could have been stockpiling the stuff for ages..
Easier to smuggle out in many small packages maybe?
Sounds real dodgey to me.

It would be interesting to know where this highly enriched plutonium originated from.

Out of some kind of shady ex soviet reactor no doubt, which some dodgey ex kgb folks have secretly kept running over the years,so they can buy really cool toys, like MEPs, banks and senators..

When you own toys like that, moving U238 is easy as boiling an egg.
And eggs will be boiled.
