If I were old....I may consider it as a problem, but I'm still in my 30's and I do take good care of my teeth.

Actually, no they are all not.

Are some? Yes. But I think scoping the office and seeing if they are driving a corvette will clue you in.

Me? My dentist is a family friend and neighbor and is semi-retired. He still does it just for the community.

Yep, My grandma was 98 and had good teeth. She brushed with baking soda water and rarely went to a dentist. She didn't even have dentures.

When you find a new dentist.

Be sure you tell him you had a checkup 6 months before and have moved and had to find a new dentist.

I have run into a couple of people that have had heart attacks right after deep cleanings. The deep cleaning dump a lot of bacteria into your system.

My girlfriend is a dental hygienist and she says that if you had good teeth and gums a year ago, it would be nothing short of "miraculous" for you to have these problems, unless you were very sick and had a serious infection lately.

She says without hesitation to cancel that rendez-vous and never turn back. That place would be a hell hole and you'll end up with more problems... That they will treat with pleasure to heal you... again...
She says to look for another one.

She also says that, from her experience, nearly 65% of dentists will screw you in some form of way, tho mostly will only change a good filling...
Once, she even had a customer who wanted a third advice about her teeth. First dentist saw 12 cavities and the second one only 4. My ex-boss' girlfriend decided to settle in the middle and declared she had found 8! So she got the job!

And one dentist admitted freely that when he began, he used to screw people but would soon find himself sleepless... Since then, he only gives good, deserved care to his patients. So all is not black, but you'll have to search for the light.

My girlfriend says that when you go see another dentist, don't tell him/her about your recent experience to see what answer you'll get, and so you do not "taint" his/her judgment about your real situation.

Thanks. It's still hard to believe that some dentist are actually willing to put a person in possible danger and a lot of pain for some extra moola in thier pocket. I realize it's just not dentists who do this either.
It's just wrong.
I will not taint my next visit to another dentist either..I will see what he/she has to say next. Maybe..I'll have 8 cavities and will need a root canal?

3 different dentists. 1 quoted $3500 ( cash) found everything but "hygiene tech said "actually your x-ray looks VERY GOOD! UM?? wtf? one said" you don't come here,unless you do deep clean -PERIOD. she fired me?? WTF?
the last one dentist ( all within 2.5 yrs) said "no gum disease..then why order deep cleaning.

The only people who could answer your questions are dental professionals and then only if they have themselves examined you. You sure you want to go with advice from people unqualified to give you that advice.

A fear of dentists and dental work is not a good starting point for facts.

I'd think listening to advice on a board is not wise, but then it's your teeth.

i have a stainless steel cap on one tooth.

i have had a couple dentist tell me i need it replaced with a gold cap and that stainless caps are only temporary.

Since then i qualified for low cost dental care under a federal program and i ask about the stainless cap.

He told me that stainless caps are just as good as gold caps and do not need replaced if you are not having any problem.

If you take care of your health, stay away from complex carbohydrates sweets and stop using fluoridated
anything, brush your teeth and floss,. and you wont need a dentist.

Mega Dentists - that is the problem. I went to a local dentist that wasn't on my insurance. I had not been to the dentist in about 10 years. He did recommend a deep cleaning. My family has a history of very bad teeth. They look good but are bad from the inside out. I decided to go to a dentist that was on my insurance for a second opinion. It was a mega dentist. They wanted me to sign on to a two year program of laser treatment for gum pockets. It would not be covered by insurance. We are pretty broke now due to being out of work for most of three years and longer for my husband. I told them no. As soon as I did I was treated like a piece of crap. The dentist became rude and hateful. They insisted on their own xrays (less than 2 weeks after the ones I brought to them) and billed my insurance when they advertise no charge for xrays on your first visit. Said they would have to pull all my top front teeth that they couldn't be fixed. I went back to the local dentist and he worked with me on price and took my insurance even though he wasn't contracted with them. He fixed all the teeth the mega dentist wanted to pull. I had half the deep cleaning but haven't had the money to go back for the second half. Will try to do that this year. Didn't have any problems with the first half and took less than an hour. He did want to do it in 4 appointments and I said no two appts. Have quite a few others to fix as well and I will use the local dentist again.

I've got bad teeth due to A: - my mother becoming very ill whilst pregnant with me, and B: - a mis-spent youth working in "security". (something I'm not proud of now).

I recently decided I should get a quote on fixing things. Three different dentists quoted me anything between $45,000 to $60,000 (AU$)! I honestly cannot see how they can charge like this for a few implants and crowns. My father had four brain tumours removed at a cost to him of $4,000 (including all follow-up visits to the specialist). What? Dentists are more than 10 times more expensive than brain surgeons?

I understand healthcare doesn't cover dental here in Australia and hence my fathers operations were partially covered but still. My brand new car didn't even cost me that much. I firmly believe dentists to be scammers who are rorting a system here that doesn't provide healthcare cover for their work. They seem to think because of that, they can just charge whatever they want. I've even got private health cover yet the maximum amount of cover I can get via that is $1000 per year. It'll take 60 years at that rate!

To rub salt into the wounds, the third dentist I got a quote from stated "hey, I need a new BMW!", when I queried the outrageous prices. I not only hate visiting them and their whizzing drills, but also now have come to hate dentists themselves.

Dentists are the car mechanics of the medical world.

Both professions are shysters: they rely on you having damage to ply their trade.

Unfortunately also they're necessary sometimes because you WILL acquire damage sometimes (whether it be tooth or car).

Just be very wary.

No offense but you guys do know that you are answering posts that are 4 1/2 years old? im sure they have had their dental issues addressed by now lol

I know you said this is going through your insurance so I don't know how helpful this will be.

Whenever I need to have any extensive dental done I fly to Costa Rica. The same root canal and filling they wanted to charge me 3k for here cost me $450 there. The dentist here wanted to do breeding and deep cleaning as well for another $2500 and it cost me less than $300 there.

The dentists here went to school in the US and were very kind. I am not sure where you live but a round trip from here is $320 and I took a few days to explore the country.

It is something to think about.
