The Russian government prevented the Polish president's plane from landing four times to divert him from a ceremony to mark the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, according to an MP. Artur Gorski said the Russians 'came up with some dubious reasons' that the aircraft couldn't land because they feared President Leck Kaczynski's presence would overshadow a similar event hosted by the Russian prime minister a few days before. And their alleged plan ended in disaster when the Polish pilots made one final and disastrous attempt to land, killing Mr Kaczynski, his wife, and 94 others on board the plane

Could this be possible?
May Russia be responsible for this deaths?

If the plane crash that killed President Kacynski was planned in order to assassinate him, it is likely that much deeper politics is behind it, not just the optics of who outshines whom at a commemoration ceremony.

Polish president Lech Kaczynski said he was concerned that Mr Obama's new strategy leaves Poland in a dangerous 'grey zone' between Western Europe and the old Soviet sphere. . . .

The Bush administration always said that the planned system - with a radar near Prague and interceptors in northern Poland - was meant as defence against Iran. But Poles and Czechs saw it as protection against Russia, and Moscow too considered a military installation in its backyard to be a threat.

At it's simplest this incident might be viewed as a warning to other Polish politicians against putting Russia in a position where she feels threatened, or there could be more nuanced reasons for it within the game of politics between the two countries. If it is "just an accident", it is definitely an odd one.
