Yes, yet another thread on pot. . .

here's my take on why pot is illegal, and why it should be legal:

legalization: it does absolutely no damage to you compared to the legal smoking drug, tobacco. without the hundreds of chemicals found in tobacco, and without the filters that are actually one of the worst parts on the cigarette, they [joints] are better for your health than cigarettes.

illicit: it is percieved as addictive. people think that it will take over their lives making them stoners. they think that once you start, your life disappears. though this does happen, it alsohappens with alcohol and tobacco, two perfectly legal drugs.

legalization: it would stop crime, empty many jails because there are many people there with pot related crimes (many), and, as one thread here on ATS showed, would save lives. a gay porn star had swallowed a bag of pot, was choking, the cops tasered him for "resisting" arrest, and he choked to death.

illicit: hemp, a fast growing renewable source of fiber, was quickly replacing trees in the paper industry. the logging barons, terrified that they were going to lose their business quickly helped make pot illegal.

legalization: it is natural. not chemicals. nor is it a narcotic, like coc aine, opium, heroin, etc.

illicit: white pride. it was once associated with the Mexican-American lifestyle, so many whites placed themselves above it. think Cheech and Chong.

illicit: taxable? noooooooo. . . because of the ease of which it can be grown by any average joe, it would be hard to tax such a drug. unlike tobacco, which needs backbreaking labor to grow, maryjuana can be grown in a shed in the backyard.

Of course you're right, the current policy stopped making sense a long time ago. None of the con's on the list are actually addressed by prohibition, and the pro's that you have mentioned are the tip of the iceburg. Unfortunately, I think this thread will be shortlived, but I can't resist giving you positive feedback before it's closed.
