Expert "ALMOST CERTAIN" South Africa World Cup to be Hit by Huge Quake!!

Hi everyone,

I found this rather bizarre story tonight by complete chance and I could not resist posting it here on ATS.

London, Apr.11 : An expert has predicted that South Africa is almost certain to be hit by a major natural disaster, and, it could strike during this summer's World Cup football tournament.

The Daily Express quoted Dr. Chris Hartnady, as saying that Durban and Cape Town as the areas most likely to be hit by a quake.

Possibly, this guy has been misquoted, but if not, then it does certainly smell a bit fishy if you ask me!

He's been warning of a major earthquake for years it seems.

I don't see where he is specifically discussing the event occurring during the world cup.

It would seem someone has decided to use his warning of an Earthquake in South Africa, something he's been saying since at least 2002 and turn it into some fear mongering article.

It's almost as if they have juiced up the title of the news story for attention, rather than quoting the man himself.

Surely, someone in this position would not have said such a thing??

I wonder if the Mirror decided NOT to carry the AQ threat and decided some other distaster would be suitable for the World cup

I have a few thoughts, that this is either distract people from the current unrest on the ground, go one up on the papers carrying the AQ story, or give a good excuse as to why a lot of the seats have not been sold i.e it's not the economy, it was threat of ABC happening..

I really don't know.. but it smells like MSM spin to me.

Can't find any article on this at The Daily Express, which is supposed to be the newspaper who quoted him.

I did find this article from 11 November 2009 though:

Where is this guy getting his information from? If he's just pulling this out of thin air, how does he expect to be taken seriously?

Between this, the Racial Unrest there, and some Al Queda threats, I really would'nt want to be there at all!

It looks like this guy has been misquoted, or just the title of the news story glorified to get attention. (although, you never know!!??)

oh...and its the soccer world cup, the next rugby world cup is here in NZ next year!!

Now that you point it out, I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Media changed his story a bit to make it more interesting.

Oh thank god! Doesn't bother me the slightest if the All Whites get hurt, I don't follow soccer.
World Cup in New Zealand! I gotta get tickets! Now the All Blacks will have no excuse to lose the World Cup.

I read somewhere that Al Qaeda has also threatened the FIFA World Cup in South Africa - target: Britain v USA. It also includes hotels and the like where supporters of these teams may be staying.

I am NZ born and I'm shocked to read your statement. G-d forbid, I hope no one gets hurt at the FIFA World Cup - oh and I am not only a huge supporter of the All Blacks but also the All Whites because they are our boys and we should be supporting them no matter what regardless of what footy code we follow.

Strange seeing as SA has of the least amount of natural desasters. No huricanes, quaks are limited etc....

There are not going to be any earthquakes in South Africa any time soon, Dr Hartnady has been completely misquoted by the tabloid trash in the UK!
