Opinion from Texan's wanted

To start off, I wrote this for a couple of reasons, first I am looking for some advice for my own personal situation. Secondly to point out that we still have some options to better our lives when we are not happy with the direction that our current local government is going. I am currently a NYS. resident who is not at all happy with the liberal/democratic agenda that is become, for me, extremely unlivable.

I have had enough of the taxes, petty laws, and community leaders to generalize. I would like to make a change. My Wife and I have two children ages 10 and 6. My wife has been a teacher with tenure for the last 13ys. and was recently told that her position is going to be eliminated at the end of this school year. So we decided that maybe it was a good time to make a change. We are just the average run of the mill early forty's couple with two kids, house, and dog. I would like to know what people who are from TX think about what parts of the state would be best for us to fit in. ie. Where the best schools are, where are the best community for kids to have fun. You get the idea. Just some advice about moving to TX. If you know any school systems looking for quality teachers in Elementary education or a reading specialist with a MS. would really help also. Any and all help is appreciated. We want out of NY. Thanks

We are from Tx and are moving out of state to raise our first son in a better city. I do live in the Dallas Metro Plex for 10 yrs and I have not seen any Improvement in the School Districts.... So my honest opinon is do some research in Austin area. I hear its good living there and is very beauitful too.

Texas isn't for everyone, you're more than likely to find an unacceptable situation far in the other direction the farther you get from population centers. I'm 20 miles from the giant metroplex and about 35 years back in time socially, comparitively in attitudes. The demographics are absolutely frightening if you've a mind and an eye for those sorts of things. And I'll point out that the situation is completely different if you live north of the big city, where it looks like one big suburb almost all the way to Oklahoma. Texas has a lot of "diversity". It would be a good idea to have a working knowledge of self defense if you live out in the country. THey still use the area behind the woodshed to settle arguments down here, I'm not joking, just dial the clock back to 1935. And the big bad inner city is only 20 miles away.

I don't know where you're from originally, but the less urban areas here can be like stepping into the Beverly Hillibillies in a sense. Okay, my advise would be to stick to the urban areas and I'd have to say that Austin would be one of the most "progressive" followed by DFW and Houston. San Antonio is a cool town, but it may be a bit of a cultural shock. If you read the news, stay away from the border (spececially since you have kids).

I sincerely ope this helps. Texas is not a utopia. Five years I've been in the country from being an urban jetsetter and it has been quite the adjustment. BTW, I've been living in Texas for 33 years. GOod Luck.

I'm from Texas, born and raised and moved to New Mexico because of the narrow minded conservative, uber religious, emotionally constipated, racist, mindset I found in a large part of Texas around the high plains and panhandle. Personally I'd rather live in paradise, have a little more sophistication, and natural beauty and make less money. I still own property in Texas and make frequent trips to take care of business; but I don't think I could live in Texas again.

I love the Gulf Coast, Hill country and desert west Texas for visiting.
For good schools, live in an affluent area. For jobs, large urban areas; just like everywhere else.

Settle problems behind the "wood shed"? Yeah. We Natives are still rather independent in cases of "justice". Man to Man? Who needs cops and lawyers. After its over, the two parties may end up friends. After lawyers, your just broke.

You being a "city boy", "progressive", and worse yet....

I'm proud to call several New York Yankees a Texan and Kinsman....they all came from the country parts of NYS. Have some friends from Jersey as well....those folks dont have good sense (but are a blast to be around!)

BTW, 1935 was a good year. Thats when Browning gave us the M35 Hi-Power 9mm pistol! Excellent Weapon (after the 1911a1 Colt, of course).

I live about 20 miles south of Dallas and it's country Baptist heaven

My county just voted in beer sales about 9 months ago , before that it was DRY...just to give you an idea how we think around here

As far as religion goes here in Texas,

havent seen any gnostics burnin on the side of the road at churchs lately.

Lots of Catholics and "babdists" around here.

We have a ton of muzzies in Richardson-istan.

Lots of Germans, Czechs, and some Ruskies.....oh yeah, we get a new crop of Mexicans daily Always fresh from across the border!


Food is pretty awesome. I know of 4 well wicked German joints (mit bier!) in the metroplex.

one good Czech place.

Cant swing a dead cat without hitting a texmex place. some better than others.

I dont think ruskies can cook without a beet and vodka...can they?

Texas Native here -and I've lived all over the Lone Star State.

If you're looking for something a little "less urban" but still nice in size, I'd wholeheartedly recommend Bryan/College Station.

Nice upper mid-size community, great schools, and home to Texas A&M University.

Austin is nice, true - but it's been growing at an unprecedented rate the past 15 years, and the traffic is absolutely maddening.

Austin might be nice for the short term, but it's going to be quickly swallowed up by San Antonio if things continue on their present course.

(read: Texas Urban Nightmare).

FLOWER MOUND....

It's a small subburb just north-west of dallas. It's growing, has a great school district and is far enough away from the city to have privacy and yet close enough for commute.

Ok! Ok! no trips to the woodshed hear please! I have been reading all the posts and they are great! everyone has given some good advice.

Now Ill give you a little more info about me so you have a better understanding of the type of person I am. As I stated above I am leaving NY because I am sick of the liberals. Ron Paul is my guy, I am against big government, I don't like people in my business, I am a loyal friend and family man, I pack heat(yes in NY legally), I don't like the fact that big brother charges me a fortune for my smokes, or the fact that I can't smoke here or there with kids in my car ect. I am a conservative. I would like to find a home that is in the suburbs with a bit of property. I like to hunt and fish.

Now I also have a whole other side to me (not a skitzo) I also like the finer things in life, I am professional, can be well dressed and educated. So I guess I could spend millions and by a 40acr ranch in the city of Dallas? just a joke I don't have millions but maybe it gives you a better Idea.

Thanks I will read every post because I am really serious about the best place to afford ably fit into my life style!

So you want to live in a Conservative Paradise and you hear Texas is such. :shk: Your Utopian political correct Dreams will be disappointed along with the 100+ Degree weather.

My advice, Avoid Austin, for it is the most liberal city in Texas and my kind of place. It called Little San Francisco here and there's a Saying, "Keep Austin Weird." Its also home to Whole Foods and suchs as well.

San Antonio on the other hand is a little bit more conservative, but the if I want some body like you buying property on my water supply and claiming you live inside the city limits when in fact you don't live in San Antonio at all. Everyone know that inside loop 410 is San Antonio, not around loop 1604.

Well here are how I describe the cities next to other type of cities.

San Antonio. Like Oakland
Houston is like LA
Dallas tries to be a big NE city.
Austin is like SF.

But here something better. find your life path and then compared the city numerology vibration by doing the following.
San Antonio
115 1526596 1+1+5=7 1+5+2+6+5+9+6=5

So if your life path is a 5 or a compatible number then move on in. But if it's a toxic to your life path, then don't move here.

By the way, don't vote for Perry, he isn't conservatives.

Boy, you don't sound very friendly at all. Sounds like you have some contempt for something that you or I have no control over. Maybe it can be settled behind the woodshed as felonius said! lol

I think the politically correct term for Austin might be "eccentric".
It's the Capitol, multicollege town, and a large but aging hippy community that comprises a sizeable middle class - and lots of establishments that cater to the students, families, lobbyists and you get the idea. Keep Austin Weird is like a motto for the local weekly tabloid. Or was that the city council? Never lived there but it's a fun town to visit, weird is optional.

San Antonio sounds "all wet" - our little town of 3000 has water issues as well. Water can be an issue in Texas - come to think of it!
