Polish Presidents plane crashers

The Polish Presidents plane has crashed on approach to Smolensk.
No mention yet as to if President Lech Kacsynski's was on board.

Wow I just woke up and heard the news . If anybody has any info please share, as our media do not know allot at this point .

From what we know there is a big chance that he might be dead .

The President and his wife where on board - 87 feared dead

If they are able to say that 87 are dead at this early stage - then it sounds as if they have arrived at that figure by just quoting the number of people on board - ie - no survivors !

Lets hope it was not brought down by someone.

From what we are told here , the plane tried to land in a deep fog but could not and while trying to gain altitude it struck a tree and crashed. Damn it , allot of our prominent politicians were on board together with the president .

I just checked the weather in that area, and it says 98% humidity, with 34F temp and a Dew Point of 34F. Does that mean it would be foggy?

Yeah, reports coming in on Twitter that the Polish Foreign Ministry has confirmed that the Polish President is dead.

Sad, sad news.

132 people on board , all dead....

Plane only holds 90 so I dont think 130+ dead,
and MSM doesn't mention weather

The full list is still not available but yes there were allot of pretty important officials . The most important people from one political party were on board . Also the head o our national bank was on board , and many more.

Sorry for the giberish but it's kind of hard to write neatly for me at the moment.

The presidential Tu-154 was at least 20 years old. Polish officials have long discussed replacing the planes that carry the country's leaders but said they lacked the funds. According to the Aviation Safety Network, there have been 66 crashes involving Tu-154s, including six in the past five years.

The Russian carrier Aeroflot recently withdrew its Tu-154 fleet from service.

Wow, that is quite a tragedy. I hope your country remains in peace in the interim, and that the remaining leaders step-up to the plate and prevent the brutality of a power vacuum.

From much of the talk on ATS, it seems that a certain segment would be dancing in the streets if a similar list of US leaders perished. However, I think the vast majority of citizens would come together to mourn patriotically. I hope the latter is what happens in Poland....

The pilot was told Smolensk's Severny airport was closed because of thick fog, according to the news agency Interfax. He was told by air traffic controllers to divert to another landing site and given a choice of landing instead in either Moscow or Minsk, the capital of Belarus. But the pilot decided to continue with the original flight plan and land at Smolensk.

He made three unsuccessful attempts to land before the crash. On the fourth try, the plane fell apart in the tree tops, Interfax said, citing officials at Smolensk's interior ministry. It seems rather incredible that the pilot chose to make so many unsuccessful attempts.

Russia's foreign ministry confirmed the cause of the air catastrophe was bad weather. "According to provisional information the crash happened because the plane failed to land at the military airport near Smolensk in conditions of severe fog.”

He opposed the EU.

He opposed the lisbon treaty.

He voiced concern over the supposed benefits of free trade agreements.

He was heading for a personal visit to the memorial site where Polish officers were murdered during World War Two.

This is a great tragedy. My sympathies go out to the Poles. Plenty of people are talking WW3, Well I predict just an accident. WW3, I don't think so. Not even close. Great topic to promote conversation and thought though.

Time will tell, I'll be sitting here watching and waiting for the start of something ominous, But I say nothing will become of it. Other than, heart ache and tears from the Polish. S&F

I'm wondering this same thing. Especially on such a notoriously outdated piece of equipment.. a tragedy from bad judgment?
