(Reuters) - Aliens exist and they live in our midst disguised as humans -- at least, that's what 20 percent of people polled in a global survey believe.

The Reuters Ipsos poll of 23,000 adults in 22 countries showed that more than 40 percent of people from India and China believe that aliens walk among us disguised as humans, while those least likely to believe in this are from Belgium, Sweden and the Netherlands (8 percent each).

However, the majority of people polled, or 80 percent, don't believe aliens in our midst. "It would appear that that there's a modest correlation between the most populated countries and those more likely to indicate there may be aliens disguised amongst them compared with those countries with the smaller populations," said John Wright, Senior Vice President of market research firm Ipsos.

"Maybe the it's a simple case that in a less populated country you are more likely to know your next door neighbor better," he said. More men than women -- 22 percent vs 17 percent -- believe that alien beings are on earth. Most of those believers are under the age of 35, and across all income classes, the survey showed. Of those who do not believe, most are women.

In a poll conducted on a Czech news site the same day, out of 8481 people 59.2% believe extraterrestrials are living amongst us.

What's your take on this? Is it a good or bad result?
I think things are moving forward, don't you?
Personally, I think the percentage of people believing ET's on Earth is much higher.

IMHO, I think aliens have the technology to do what ever they want, be it walking around on earth or flying some really awesome UFO.

I would think Aliens might have something better to do then just live amongst Humans, or it could be the best disguise to get away from an alien war of some kind.

I would like to believe aliens walk amongst humans, but do they really?

In the end it is all Speculation.

I like this kind of stuff though

We have enough problems with interdimensional beings let alone intergalactic one;I've been around mental hospitals for 11 years and have seen the possessed and demonic, ghosts that infect the machine and take over internal 'alters' or principalities and powers are very real and just as much a problem as greys, the anunnaki etc.I can see spirit beings on occasion the human race is one very polluted zoo without aliens in the flesh.

Very well put.

I bet due to the recent advent of the show "V" making a come back, people are starting to consider aliens among us.

You make a point though, we already have enough unexplainable/unknown things to worry about, hopefully this doesnt lead to a modern day witch hunt if people start believing their neighbors are really aliens!

Hello,

Well i was just wondering, how much could a poll counting 23 000 people in 22 countries cost and WHO actually paid for it.

Have a nice day

Extrapolating the opinions of 23,000 people to 6,692,030,277?
That's pretty bold.

I don't think the statistics are a problem if the sample is random, however getting a truly random global sample would be the hard part.

According to this sample size calculator, when your population goes from 7 million to 7 billion, the sample size required for a 1% margin of error only goes up from 9591 to 9604. Yes, I know that sounds strange but that's the way the statistics work.

www.researchinfo.com...

So 23,000 is too many for a 1% margin of error if the sample was random.

At least the existence of aliens is debatable. I don't think whether the sun revolves around the Earth is debatable, yet 20% of Americans believe that and the percentage is probably higher on a global basis:

Twenty Percent of Americans Think the Sun Revolves Around Earth

I understand the theory but I had no idea that such a small sample would be considered valid.

Wouldn't part of "random" necessitate a sample full range of cultural sampling? Especially in a case like this.

You're right to question the validity but the problems are more likely due to some kind of bias, such as Coverage bias

And sometimes the polls are wrong, because even sampling 10,000 people only gives us 95% confidence the percentage is within +/- 1%, so that leaves the other 5%.

The best-known failure of opinion polling to date in the United States was the prediction that Thomas Dewey would defeat Harry S. Truman in the 1948 US presidential election. Major polling organizations, including Gallup and Roper, indicated a landslide victory for Dewey.

Regarding selecting a random sample, if you were able to assign a number to every person on Earth old enough to answer the question, and then use a random number generator to randomly select numbers from the ~7 billion pool of numbers, and if you could avoid the "no response" and other biases, I think the statistics would hold up that about 10,000 people would give you a 95% confidence the percentage is plus or minus a percent. So no, I don't think it matters too much if some cultures aren't represented in that process because if the sample is really random, you're likely to miss cultures with both higher and lower than "typical" belief rates in proportional numbers so that shouldn't introduce bias.

To give individual figures for each country like the figures they gave for India and China requires polling a lot more people.

Also there's one type of bias in this poll I don't know how to deal with, and that's if some of the people polled really are aliens disguised as humans, and they don't want people to know it, they could bias the results.

This thread reminds me of the 1988 movie "They Live":

www.imdb.com...

A drifter discovers a pair of sunglasses that allow him to wake up to the fact that aliens have taken over the Earth.

Those aliens looked pretty freaky but you couldn't tell they were aliens without the special glasses. Not too many movies creep me out but that one did!

I have to say, the first thing that came to my mind when I read this article was that it might serve as a kind of study for a worst-case scenario in the event of UFO disclosure. Because, if you think about it, what would be the worst thing that could happen if disclosure occurred? The answer: If people started accusing one another of being aliens in disguise, and turning against each other.

It's basically a study of the biggest threat we may have in the event of disclosure: Ourselves.

I was a little disheartened to learn that 1 in 5 believe this. Hopefully this doesn't stall any efforts for disclosure that may be going on.
