Despite public opposition, Health Secretary Andy Burnham yesterday said he had personally backed closing maternity and children’s services in Greater Manchester “because we believe it’s right”.

But he sparked outrage when he slammed the Tory pledge to reopen them if there was local backing, claiming it was not “responsible or credible”. Speaking at medical charity, the King’s Fund, he said some hospitals had to move services to improve patient safety and care.

This seems really strange to me, I don't see how closing down local A&E and Maternity units in the UK will improve health care, nor does the article explain either, they just say “because we believe it’s right” without any other explaination.

This just doesn't add up at all, where are people meant to go in an emergency?

Man this is getting depessin, the more I think about this the more I realize my 5 year old daughter could do a better job at running the country.

Thnx for the reply muzzleflash Just been reading the new comments left in the article and one of them says "Perhaps prefering you dead at the point of need, in order to grasp at your estate"

I was thinking along those lines myself. Save money and make money at the same time... Maybe they're not so dumb afterall.

I still think my 5 year old would do a better job. She's a bright kid
