Great videos. I've always cared so much for all animals, even going out of my way to put every spider outside safely, rather than have it squashed by someone with an irrational fear.

The hippopotamus is the most dangerous animal in Africa.

I'd be more afraid of a charging bull Elephant!

I think I would # myself if I saw the killer whales doing that. Just watching the video made me jump out of my seat!!
(I have a phobia of open waters like that so seeing things come popping out and displacing the water just makes me freaked out!!)

The hippo is super dangerous as you probably couldn't see it coming till it attacks whereas an elephant you'd know to steer clear. :3

I find it so interesting that these Animals can be so Ruthless and Violent and yet so Caring and Gentle.

Just amazes me. What Possesses an Animal to save another animal?

You'd never believe it if you didn't see it..

Instinct. nothing more.

I wonder why people these days, especially here on ATS go ape# over animals...
I mean, people go crazy if they see two different kinds of animals sitting side by side, saying how cute it is, how great nature is and blablabla.
If i sit next to an asian human, nobody goes crazy, saying how cute it is, how great that is that we can get along...no, that's expected, but with animals it's the greatest thing since sliced bread and proves "intelligence" and how "beautiful" nature is.

Animals aren't intelligent, they're driven by instinct. If they were intelligent, they wouldn't die so easily, wouldn't live in earthholes and certainly would do something against Zoos

I do believe you inadvertently made a racist comment... but I'll take it as you didn't mean it that way.

People freak out over it as it isn't perceived as possible for them to do. Personally I know wild animals are definitely smarter than most give them credit for but comparing them to a homo sapien's brain function is quite an outlandish undertaking. Instinct and Learning are the same thing as the Nature versus Nurture argument and it is quite difficult to know for sure what the real psychology is.

Animals are amazing! I loved the vids!!
I had a thread about a crow and a kitten. The crow was actually caring for the kitten. That surely has nothing to do with instinct as instinct would tell the bird to stay away.

You talk of Instinct. Then wouldn't it be Instinct to survive no matter what? Fight or Flight response...

How does that explain a Dog, putting itself in danger, to save another dog?

A Hippo, putting itself in danger to protect another Animal?

A whale, returning a Seal Pup back on shore so it can live..

These, my friend, are not Instinct in the true sense of the word. If instinct took over, you would never have seen anything like this.

Even if was proven to be some sort of Instinct, to me, it's still Remarkable.

?????????????????????????? that is basically just like saying if humans was inteligent then we would not go out and comitt crime knowing that if we get cought we are going to prison.

or we would not take drugs knowing that in the long run we are only damaging our own health.

but the fact is humans still do theese things it does not mean we are dumb creatures and u say animals would not live in earth holes if they was inteligent????? humans lived in caves for hundreds of years im not saying that one day they will take over the world or anything stupid like that but what i am saying is animals are far more inteligent then i believe we humans ever thought .

Wow what an amazing set of videos. I would never have thought I'd see hippo behaviour like that, as someone said above, it is more than instinctive. It certainly seems to go against nature. The hippo certainly looks like the peacekeeper of all animals especially as he walks off with hose birds on his back.
I know they can be dangerous especially to human beings maybe, but the hippo must live among those impala and is pissed off seeing the crocodile ruin the day. Also heres a thought, it is usually thought animals aren't self aware and don't have any sense of self, but if a hippo has tried to revive the animal using breath, does that not mean he is fully aware of the breathing processes and that if something is no longer moving it has run out of breath?

the case of binti the gorilla a few years ago at the san diego zoo begs me to differ. a small boy, 6 years old fell into the pen. binti picked up the boy and carried him to the entrance where the care takers enter. during this time, she was stroking him, comforting him and protecting him from the other gorillas in the pen.

a case where a there was a raging fire in a building. a fireman heard a sound and went to investigate. he found a small kitten outside and safe. he went back to work but checked in on the kitten. he found another. what was happening was that the mother was going in repeatedly into inferno at her own risk to rescue her babies. later, when she and her babies were taken to a vet for care, mom was separated for serious burns. after a separation of a few days she was reunited with them. anyone who know cats knows that the maternal bond is normally not very strong. a female cat can and will lose interest if she is separated from her brood. the staff was worried that this happened. instead, she eagerly sniffed out each kitten to check that they were all there and then proceeded to care for them like she had never been gone.

animals are more aware that we believe.
