May I suggest picking up a book by Matthew Stein called; When Technology Fails. It's the best book on survival (longer term) I've seen, pretty much
an encyclopedia of knowledge of how to live without electricity. Not much for wilderness survival but that is covered well in other books.
This book is a MUST for urban/suburban survival, chapters cover: water, shelter, first aid, growing and storing food, metalworking, homesteading,
green building and much more. Nearly 500 pages worth of text and many good references and more importantly, web links to some great sites I never knew
about.
