"I was doing geo-physical scanning on the surface of a mound when I detected something round-shaped underneath," Mokhtar recalled in an interview at the site.

"When we excavated, we were stunned at what we saw. We never thought that the technology and architecture here so far back in history was so exact.

"The precision suggests that the management system of the civilisation that lived here was very advanced," he added.

With its layers of perfect squares and circles, the "Sungai Batu Monument" - labelled "SB1B" - appears to be a sundial.

This is seriously cool. They find a huge ancient sun dial that was made about nineteen hundred years ago. The precision and quality of the workmanship is intriguing as is the fact that it is similar to what other ancient civilizations were designing.

The pyramid theme and now the sun dial theme. There is no doubt that they all seemed to worship the sun. They all had some kind of advanced knowledge of the planetary bodies as well. We can look to the artwork in the Vatican and see that the sun in prominent in most of its tapestries and themes as well.

I find it all very interesting myself. What are your thoughts?

Excellent Thread and a GREAT find...

It would appear they have only scratched the surface there and I for one, would expect more to come from this site.

Finds like this always excite me, as they so clearly illustrate how little we know of our history.

I wonder what the dimensions of this object are (exactly) and whether or not they correlate to any of the basic dimensions of the other ancient sites - Giza/Teotihuacan/Stonehenge/Puma Punku/etc.

Maybe the site is legit and maybe it isn't? Further research and corroboration will see.

The OP link gets a little carried away with speculation...in my opinion. Another link...Civilization in Malaysia might have been oldest in South-east Asia is more reserved.

Politics and history go hand in hand...claims of being the 'oldest or earliest civilization' carry a lot of political weight in the area. The Malaysian Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim illustrates the point...

"The Bujang Valley in Sungai Batu is a determination to estimate the new civilisation which is known to have existed much earlier than the one existing in neighbouring countries either in Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia or Thailand. "It is hoped that no one will belittle this effort because when it is endorsed by the whole world, Malaysia will be on a high and old archeological, anthropological and sociological perspective," he said to reporters after visiting the Sungai Batu archeological complex in the Bujang Valley, here today.

Archeological site proves earlier civilisation in Malaysia

The country is divided along racial and religious lines (who isn't?) and national identity is currently under pressure. Taking the cultural high ground may be more to do with modern politics than ancient history.

They're suggesting a date of 100AD. That's some 1000 years after the height of the Egyptian civilization, ~2000 years after Stonehenge and maybe 400 years before Puma Punku.
