Louis Theroux on Survivalists!

I noticed there had been a few threads about (in my opinion) one of the greatest documentary makers Louis Theroux, yet nobody had mentioned Louis Theroux on survivalists.

It really is my favourate episode of Louis Theroux and i thought i would share it with whomever is interested as it covers alot of interesting ground and the people he meets (bar the neo nazi's who are idiots) are extremeley influential.

In the episode which is part of his weird weekends series, he goes to check out a group of families living in Idaho in a mountain refuge names "almost heaven", aswell as visiting an right wing neo nazi church (hense the idiot part above).

Louis Theroux is the man!

I loved the documentary that he did with the female body-builders and how all their husbands were dweeby little bitches who lived in fear of their wives bad moods! lmao

He also has a really good way of asking the rude questions without being rude. Out of all the famous people I've seen around London, he was the first one I nearly went up to to ask for an autograph. I'm that sad. lol

Yeah i've seen that episode too! my favourate part is the weedy little guy at female body building convention and he walkie talkies his wife like "hey are you weighed in can you come an do an interview" it's so funny!

I don't think asking mr Theroux for an autograph is sad at all, he's literally one of my hero's!

Is is awesome. I like how he gets information out of people by acting dumb and letting them drop their defense and feel more comfortable around him/feel sorry for him.

He's a genius. They use to show his "wacky weekends" on TV here but have stopped.

almost heaven has not been there for a long time..it has been basically shut down and Bo is not in the state much any more... land is now owned by a different group of people....

Just watched all 6 parts,and was happily surprised to find that I had missed this episode when it aired on TV.

Some great stuff in there,I bet some of those folks are on ATS

Good ol Louis,with his likable but nerdy ways.
He should consider doing a follow up series,to catch up with some of the people he met back then.

I wonder if that old boy is still living in a hole in the snow?

Louix is an immature person who has exploited his almost child-like interviewing technique. I find him rude, evasive, whimsical, and essentric. He often doesn't get to the real truth and instead just focuses on small insignifcant subjects. I mean who cares about the husbands of body-building wives?

Seriously, go watch Discovery Channel - you might learn something!

You make a fair point, he's a crap interviewer on the surface and doesn't even make his own judgement or statement.

However, he does break down barriers and usually succeeds in geniune exchanges, albeit surface-level stuff.
But conspiracy-wise he's no Jesse Ventura that's for sure.

Thanks for sharing! Theroux is entertaining and even though we don't get him on TV where I live, I've watched a half dozen or so of his episodes over the years. Love it.

I watched this last night and wow, not what I expected! I was intrigued when the owner of almost heaven (Bo) sent Louis out to where he could find the "violent conspiracy" cadre. Louis must have been a little nervous when he walked up to the 2 men working on a structure, after all, Bo said they would probably get greeted with a gun and a "get the hell off my property".

Instead of encountering a violent, hateful, lunatic fringe, Louis was welcomed by Mike Kane(Caine?), a normal, thinking, working class, god fearing, generous and polite man who believes in America and the constitution. Mike didn't come off as a gun-nut psycho killer; He came off as a man whom was concerned with the state of the country and was living the way he was as a means to protect his loved ones.

I think Louis was STUNNED when all was said and done with this episode, in regards to mike. I mean if you can come off as "not insane" after spending a few days with Louis, you are in the infinitesimally small minority. Kudos to Mr. Kane.

The hardware store guy seemed like an ignorant, low IQ jerk. The aryan brotherhood guys were genuinely stupid on the fringe of insanity. The guy that lived in his tiny cabin in the woods seemed normal enough to me. He wasn't bothering anybody out there.

I'd be interested to read other people's impressions of mike. Remember, this episode is 11 years old now. We can look back at it now and say that none of that UN or doomsday stuff has happened, yet it seems a lot more believable now than it did back then, IMO.

Great episode, again, thanks for sharing. I wouldn't have seen this otherwise.

I don't do much in the way of tv but i watched all 6 parts.
That was a well worth it waste of my 60 minutes or so thanks for the link.

Would this be the same Louis Theroux who made the documentary supporting the expansion of the nuclear power industry? The man is a scumbag, attention seeker and corporate whore. He is almost as bad as that other provocateur Jon Ronson.

If Louis Theroux supports nuclear power then he goes up in my estimations.
Myself, and quite a few of my friends and peers rely on those powerstations for fair and honest work and putting food on the table.
